Faithful replication of the original 1970 Upsetter pressing of this classic album, produced by the legendary Lee Scratch Perry!Limited edition yellow vinyl pressing in a reverse board jacket!Originally issued in 1970,Soul Rebels was the first album credited to Bob Marley & the Wailers, and it was also the band's first full-length collaboration with producer Lee Scratch Perry, for whom they had already recorded a string of fairly successful singles.Working with the newly configured Upsetters band,Marley and crew delivered a strange and wonderful set of early reggae that at times plays fast and loose with the already established conventions of the genre -- on My Cup the beat sounds inside out, while It's Alright sounds like a slightly Jamaicanized version of Motown soul.Other songs, such as the beautifully harmonized Try Me,show their deep roots in rocksteady. One of the most arresting tracks on the album is the Peter Tosh sung Four Hundred Years,on which Tosh unburdens himself of some of his typically dread pronouncements in his rich, chesty voice.

Amazing early Marley!
Those who criticize this because of the sound quality or production are missing the whole point. This is incredible music and the beginnings of a legend. I consider this and African Herbsman to be absolutely essential to a Bob Marley fan. The sound is much improved with the new Trojan remasters and to my ears it sounds fantastic! Someone should put together a vinyl reissue of this incredible album. Masterpiece.

Nothing special here
This album was produced and recorded very cheaply, and that comes across very clearly when you listen to it. The songs are not very well polished or anywhere near politically/religiously charged, that would come later. If you heard this album playing in HMV you'd think it was a 1960s American Soul group. No horns, trumpets, reggae drum beat or powerful lyrics here.
