Tactical Pistol Shooting: Your Guide to Tactics & Techniques That Work

Great Book For The Non Professional Too
I bought the book to augment military training the the distant past and some informal instruction from a great instructor. I wanted sometthing that was more focused on the need to win a gunfight that started from a defensive position and probably unexpected direction.I think this is an area where (as a civilian) it's critical to do a few things well (with a very low probability of error) without the need for constant training. It also helps as a review before going to the range to avoid wasting rounds and further learning bad habits. To those with no experience the book is a step too far down the path. For those who live or work in an environment where firearms proficiency needs to be devleoped to and maintained at a very high level the book is probably too basic. However, for the other 80% of the population the book is a treasure. I own several more advanced books but this is the book I need to keep on the table to periodically review.I think it is a very good prelude to professional instruction , either at the entry level or recurrent instruction and fine tuning or learning more advanced concepts. It is unfortunate that law abiding citizens need to have as much protections as is demanded by today's threats. Finally the book's emphasis on safety is very presented with a view to the real world. I'm stunned at some of the things I see at they pistol range in the evenings. Not perfect, but Highly recommended, (I think for some reviewers perfection is only found in the mirror)

Fundamentals
Disclaimer: this is the only book of this kind that I've read, so my basis for comparison is limited.Great fundamental presented by a guy who has been there. There are lots of guys who teach, but not so many that have actually been in real combat situations with real people shooting back. That makes all the difference to me.The photos are excellent and there are lots of them. Photos are much more effective than excessive narrative when teaching technique (i.e. how to hold the pistol, body alignment, etc). I'm learning a lot from the book. I might prefer more of an emphasis on basic shooting fundamentals vs. techniques covering, for example, shooting weak-handed while wounded, but maybe that's not the intended scope this book. But don't get me wrong, the fundamentals are covered.I definitely recommend the book and I'm glad I bought it. I'd do it again.

Excellent Starting Point
I actually looked at this on loan from a library first, then purchased. Great price. I refer to this all the time as I work on building my skills. Lots of illustrations and written so that it is very easy to understand and put into practice. If you're just staring out like I am, this book is great. I could see a more advanced shooter being less impressed, unless they wanted a back to basics review. Drills are good to improve skills. I'm using this to develop my skills and then decide if I want to pursue IDPA. Recommended for beginners and for those who want to have enough proficiency for self defense, but not necessarily as a hobby or sport.

Great guide for novice or expert.
I'm not a gun lover, I just see their practical use. I wanted to learn the right way to use a gun for personal protection. This book provides a no-nonsense tutorial on how to use a gun for that purpose while minimizing the opportunities to become a victim. It may sound brutal at times, but it addresses the fact that there is danger against which we need to defend ourselves. I appreciated the frank attitude along with the extensive detailed descriptions of self defense strategies. I know a lot of gun "experts" who could benefit from the author's experience as well. And if that's not enough, this is a nicely published book, not some low cost printout, that I got for a very reasonable price.

Tons of Pictures with Explanations
Great overview of tactical shooting. Has the most illustrations of any similar book I've seen on the market. The chapter on "Shooting While Wounded", for example, contains 40 pages of text and pictures. Some of the pictures are repetitive and the chapter on "Pistol Nomenclature & Terms" could have been greatly shortened or eliminated all together. Most people reading this type of book already know terms such as - slide, trigger and muzzle.Overall a worthwhile book to read and keep around as a reference.

Thorough though still a book
This book definitely covered the fundamentals of shooting for a beginner and has materials for an intermediate. There are many sequences of nicely done color photographs. While it should be possible to train from this instruction, it is difficult without an instructor to get proper feedback on what one is doing wrong. I suppose video recording might help to review with this book. This book would likely form a good basis for a course accompanying instruction.

Excellent, even for newcomers
When I started reading this book, I knew nothing about self defense, at least not about self defense involving firearms. For a moment I feared the contents of the book would be way above my level, but after the first few chapters I was proven wrong. My only "complaint" is the apparant lack of structure of the first chapter, but other than that it was excellent all the way. Especially the images were very helpful. It gets 4 stars from me!

It's ok.
Do you spend a lot of time at the range and reading online forums and gun magazines about tactics and techniques? If so, this book will seem very introductory. You might pick up a couple useful tidbits, but most of it will be recapitulative. If you are a beginner, this book will do a great job at giving you a conscientious and serious mindset as well as some useful information on the mechanics of shooting. I think the reviews raised my expectations a little too high, but I did not regret the purchase. In my opinion it isn't worth the cover price of $25, but if you find it for less than $10, I would recommend it, especially if you are just starting out.

A Tactical Review
Introduction:In the 21st century world of knowledge it is often hard to trust the many writers who profess to be the "know it all" of your subject. Many have not real clue or they just focus on their own personal strength and don't give the reader the whole picture. Not so with this book, two things come across from the outset (1) the author has had experience in his field of writing. (2) he has gone out of his way to make sure the reader can with relative ease understand the content of the subject.Layout and presentation:Layout is another area that is important to me. As a visual, kinaesthetic learner I hate pages of just text. In fact I don't purchase books like this. If the writer can't be bothered to present the book in an interesting manner that the reader can following easily then why should I be bothered to read it. This book does not fall into this category. This book is designed to give the reader/learner information without having to search too hard for it. It is well laid out, short sections, 1.5 spacing between lines making it easy to add you own notes. Additionally, the book is well illustrated, 100dreds of clear photos to show you what the author is trying to communicate.Technical knowledge:I am no expert in this subject but the book is informative and gives out lots of good tips and knowledge as well as safety stuff. As I have not read other books on this subject I have nothing to compare it to other than my personal experience while living in America. The book taught me a lot of good practice and affirmed others. At times I found some of the technical descriptions hard to get my head around, not because they were long winded, I just didn't understand it. The photo often helped. My conclusion on this is, it only happened a few times, I think it may have been a printing error and also I often read it at night when I was tired. Also as the writer addresses most situations there is a lot of cut and pasting of text to other similar techniques with the same actions. This is not a bad thing if using the book as a reference but when reading from cover to cover a bit repetitive. The section I enjoyed was on the combat colour coding. I knew about this from a training session some year back and I forgot what it was called. It was a shout section but got me to research more on it. The 4 stage for dealing with a threat were good too. Not a lot for the left hand shooter in this book, and not must said for shooters who primary shooting side is different from the dominant eye. This was surprising as the author is a right hand shooter with left eye dominance. I noted that as this is how I shoot and was looking forward to him addressing this but didn't really develop.Did it do what it said on the tin for me and would I recommend this book?Yes is my overall answer. This book sets out to take the reader on a journey of techniques, skills and to challenge your mental mind set. I book achieves this as I would call it more a reference manual that a deep read of theory. Is this book for professional shooters? Really I don't know, as I am not a professional. I would think it is not as if you are a professional tactical shooter you should know this stuff. However, is it suited to the novice to intermediate shooter, or home defence? I should say so. It is an easy read and will inform you of many techniques that will ensure you employ safe practice and it will help you reduce the risk of becoming a victim should the undesirable threat come your way.HD

Clear color pictures set this book apart from others.
Good book with clear color pictures illustrating things mostly found in other books (e.g. Gabriel Suarez). Biggest advantage and reason why I kept this book - the clear color pictures. The techniques themselves are hardly new and differ only slightly from things found in other books like the ones of the earlier mention Gabriel Suarez and Gun Magazines like Combat Handguns and Guns and Weapons for Law Enforcement. Nonetheless I would recommend it, especially as a first primer on gun handling in defensive scenarios. Looking for information about tactical movement and +two men tactics - look somewhere else (so far, nothing could beat "The Tactical Advantage").RegardsThorsten Wieking
