Weaver Leather Throw Weight

Great for Ham Radio Antenna Work
I purchased this to assist in putting up ham radio dipoles. Here's some things to know.1. It appears well constructed. I bashed it on trees, had it hit the ground and generally threw it around while putting up antennas and it has held up well to the abuse.2. It CAN get stuck in trees. While the design is good, if you have to back it up and pull it back over a branch it might get stuck. Not an issue with the design, more a fact of life given how trees are constructed. A heavier weight may be more likely to pull your line over the branch better but a heavier weight might be harder to use.3. It doesn't seem real heavy but trying to accurately throw it overhand over a tree branch 40 feet up is a real challenge. I'm glad I didn't go with a heavier bag. I ended up using an underhand swinging/sling technique to fling it up and was able to get it quite high. Conclusion: If you're looking for a good weighted bag for helping to put wire antennas up in trees this is a very useful and economical tool.

Exactly what I wanted! (12oz is plenty)
Prior to purchasing I noticed a number of reviews said the 16oz one was too heavy so I got the 12oz model. It has PLENTY of heft to it to throw lines up in a tree. We camp dispersed most of the year and frequently out in the rain. I like putting up tarps when we camp and I put them up using paracord lines. I had a throw weight I made myself but finally decided to get one of these. This worked exceedingly well. It made it so much easier to get the lines up in the trees where I wanted them. Great product.

Good Standard Weaver Weight
Having owned several already, it's fine. This is the standard weight that comes with most of the kits. It works fine as it should and the quality is excellent. Now, if you measure the weight on an accurate scale, it is actually about .8oz heavier than what it says. This is pretty common amongst throw weights. Also, I have noticed a tendency for this particular TYPE of weight to get stuck in the tree limbs. The thinner bullet shaped weights don't get stuck as often. I coated my weights with plastic coating and it definitely helps keep them from getting stuck.

A 16oz version is heavier than you think
I assumed that since I was a big guy and I knew I had a rather long and heavy tether to throw that I would get the largest size. When it arrived I was shocked to find that it is indeed very heavy in the hand. I'm not sure that I will be able to throw this the entire distance I require with the line attached. As a matter of comparison an M67 Hand grenade is 14oz or 400g. I'm sure a lot of thought went into that mass and so I should have considered that size as the ideal starting point.

Well made, actually worth the $$
I thought “how complicated can this be?” considering the price but after using this a few times I really don’t feel bad about this purchase at all. It’s gotten some rude abuse getting thrown up/over/thru tree limbs and across the ground, plummeted into nasty pond water, etc. and this thing has been a champ. I thought any number of times “that things gotta be busted apart at a seam after that mess” but it continues to hang tough. I’m more than a little surprised at this point. Seems extremely well made & it really does seem to do an exemplary job in carrying line up/over/through the trees. The 12 oz weight has been plenty for me, I don’t believe bigger would be better in this case ... just pretend you’re throwing a full can of Coke/beer where you want this to go.

Throw Weight
It took a while to figure out how to use this because it's a bit heavy... so be careful with the one that you order, you may want to get one a bit lighter than you're estimating... I picked up the 16oz which turned out to be much heavier than I needed. It took me awhile to get the swing of things, but after a while I got it and can launch this a good 30 feet in the air. Will be buying the 12oz. or 8oz. at a later date.

Weaver Leather Throw Weight [Orange 12 oz]
This Weaver 12oz throw weight is nicely made and was reasonably priced here on Amazon. It's made with a tough, woven Cordura outer fabric, not leather as seems stated in the title, and has a rubber inner bag to contain the #8 lead shot within, but still allow it to move around freely inside. The 7/8" diameter attachment ring is permanently stitched into the fabric and is more than large enough for the 3/16" braided rope I normally use with it. The bright orange color of this throw weight is easy to see and seems to be holding up to dirt, abrasion and UV from sunlight, with no sign of fading yet.

A simple tool with many functional uses.
Sturdy material, bright color and the 12oz weight make this a very useful tool for getting a rope/wire/hose over tree limbs or onto any high/distant locations. It's heavy enough to get through the leaves on trees, but not so heavy that it would damage my roof. I personally use this nearly every weekend in the summer as we go camping. I attach the throw weight to an extension cord with an outdoor light on one end, then I toss it over a branch on a tree, then I can easily raise the light up in the tree to give overhead light which also attracts the bugs away from us on the ground. I've used it to clear limbs off the roof at my house and have used it in low lying areas in the crawl space under my house and under my deck. I needed to run a hose under my deck and rather than crawling it across, I tossed the throw weight from one side to the other, then pulled the hose across. Simply attach the throw weight to a rope/wire/hose and toss it where you need. A simple tool with many functional uses.

Works for me !!!
Well built. Stiches are strong. Perfect weight. They are quite robust as it takes about 10 times to get it where you want to go for very high branches and they crash down to the ground each time. It has helped me dozens of times for two things : to get a string in place to pull in a strong rope for pulling on the tree while cutting to add a layer of safety AND for getting a hand chainsaw in place to cut high branches.

Works fine
This throw works as it should but it is a nylon material, not leather as in the name.

Wrong
Was sent the wrong size. All balls used to be color coded now I don't know what is happening with Weaver. I liked the Weaver I knew.
