Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band are firmly established as one of the most imaginative acts to have emerged from late-'60s America. The historically vital recordings preserved on this CD -- a live set captured from Avalon Ballroom in 1966 and a radio station set from 1967 -- capture Beefheart and his musicians as they emerge from their blues-based beginnings and begin to evolve into something far stranger. The set is accompanied by background notes and rare images.

I think those who love late sixties Blues-Rock could dig this collection
Although this is mainly for the serious Beefheart fan, I think those who love late sixties Blues-Rock could dig this collection. I really love the players at this time. For those who thought Beefheart got too far out later they may be able to get into this material better.

Better be a hard core fan
1966 recordings are great. 1967 recordings SUCK!!! They should have been left in the vault.

A must have for true fans
Pretty good recording of the Avalon Ballroom show. Highly recommended for Beefheart fans. Shows the material that the early band played live, lots of blues.

Captain Live 1966-67
The Captain as he first started out in the direction of more blues based rock. You do hear Electricity and some others from Safe as Milk and a song from Howlin Wolf, these to me are the highlights . The recordings are rated average on some and above average on others but much better sounding then the boots that are out there. However devoted fans of the Captain will want this for there collection. There is a small booklet that comes with some interesting info of these early recordings on this disc.

Half a good album
The '66 recordings make this worthwhile, but the '67 concert suffers from poor sound.

Nice to hear the early live versions of Safe is Milk-era Beefheart, and I like the blues cover versions that fill out the setlist. Note, the radio broadcast quality is pretty echo-ey, but also enjoyable nevertheless.

Captain Beefheart and the Magic Band in fine form (as always)
It's a bootleg containing unheard pre-Safe as Milk performances in (somewhat/for its time) studio quality. Mind you, there's a lot of recycled material (this is the first time the complete Avalon Ballroom tape has been released but selections have been circulating for decages), especially at the end where they used some cropped BBC boots to flesh out the end of the disc. The BBC boot being cropped, I took off a star. I don't blame them for wanting to fill up the disc, I just wish they kept the John Peel outro at the end of Kandy Korn. Ho Hum. The Avalon Ballroom is a lovely blues work out and a must hear and if you don't own the BBC recordings this is as good a chance as any.

Great early Cpt Beefheart/Magic Band set
Great early Cpt Beefheart/Magic Band set... very good sound on the Avalon live material. The extra sessions after the Avalon live material , although rough sounding , are fascinating , and I find them quite listenable and very enjoyable. , although hi-fi buffs may beg to differ.Neat 'period' artwork as well...
