Different blood type cookbooks use essentially the same template.

I bought two of these books--the type O (my type) and type A (my spouse's). I was initially puzzled when I opened up the O book (the first I bought) and saw a lot of grain-based and egg-based breakfast recipes and multiple sandwiches and pastas for lunch and dinner (these recipes head up the chapters). Then I bought the A book and was surprised to find that the two books are virtually identical apart from ingredient substitutions. This, I think, gives a skewed idea of what's appropriate for each type: the type O cookbook has more grain-based recipes with cheese (and vegetarian recipes) than you would expect and the type A book has more meat-based recipes than I had thought ideal for that types. The meal plans follow this same pattern: first week for Os has 5 vegetarian meals and only 4 meals with red meat (the rest of the meals have neutral meats or eggs) while the first week for As has 10 meals with poultry or fish and 7 vegetarian meals (so much for "largely vegetarian")--the remainder of the meals have eggs. (An aside--like most meal plans in cookbooks, I find this one pretty unattainable: how many different recipes is the average person going to have time to cook in a single week?) Yes, in the type O book, the grains called for are neutral (rice, millet bread, etc.) as are the cheeses and the meats called for in the A book are also neutral (salmon, poultry). But overall, the proportion of types of recipes are really quite similar. Plus, as others have pointed out, there are a few errors--bananas in a recipe for As and a lentil stew in a recipe for Os (these contradict the pocket guides I have, but maybe the recommendations have changed?).This annoys me because it makes eating for your type seem like a pseudo-individualistic marketing tactic. The emphasis here seems to be on taking a "healthy diet" template (whole foods, no excess sugars or processed ingredients, abundant vegetables and high-quality proteins) and tweaking it slightly for each type's "avoid" foods. Maybe there really are profound differences between the types and making small eliminations (not eating red meat for As and not eating gluten for Os) can effect enormous change. However, critics of Dr. D'Adamo argue that the health gains noticed by people who adopt the blood type diet are largely due to switching to a more balanced whole-foods diet and these books would seem to suggest that's the case, since that is the basic template for both books. That said, I will probably keep them because I like the recipes (I'm giving two stars because the recipes really do look good). I may try using the two side by side in making meals for myself and my spouse--but in that case, I'd rather have one big cookbook with the variants for each type in that case (toggling back and forth on the iPad is kind of a pain).

High hopes, let down

Disappointed. Bought this book over a year ago and never used it. I'm an accomplished cook, and capable of scouring the Internet for recipes. Excited and new to the world of "diet" cookbooks, I bought this expecting recipes which were centered around beneficial foods for Type A, with neutrals and no "avoids". I was shocked and dismayed to find them in many of the recipes, and really no emphasis on the beneficials. Later, I read that the cookbooks were written so that families could use them to create recipes to satisfy members of different blood types. Sorry, but that's really lame. This book should have NO AVOID INGREDIENTS IN IT. The whole idea is to stop using those foods, as they are damaging to us. Now, after having gone chiefly paleo and reading the reviews for many guides and cookbooks, I see that poor composition is common. Finally as a Type A I see a need for a cookbook which eliminates coconut, banana, nightshades, cabbage, cauliflower and most cheeses. I may write one.

Great Resource! Needs Editing...

This is a must have for anybody really trying to follow the A Blood Type diet. Planning meals from this book is so much more relaxed than trying to amend other recipes to fit the blood type diet. It has made grocery shopping and meal planning much easier for me. Plus, the recipes are delicious. The Veggie Lasagna is the best veggie lasagna I have ever had! And some of the meals seem so indulgent compared to how I was trying to follow the blood type diet on my own - especially the Herb-Crusted Turkey Breast, Stone-Fruit Salad, and Fish Tacos. Major props to Chef Kristin O'Conner for developing such healthy, delicious meals!HOWEVER, this book is poorly edited and not appropriate for people just beginning to cook. There is no ingredient index, no sense of how long recipes will take to make, not enough suggestions for pairing food, and too many omissions/typos. One soup recipe says to "add water bring to boil and simmer," but never says how much water. I guessed 4 c. and it worked out. Another says "bake until..." but it never says how long or at what temperature. Some recipe titles mention ingredients that are not in the recipe! This is poor editing, and should be improved for future editions. I would recommend that the publisher create a site for people to report such omissions/ typos.Other suggestions for the next edition.- A list in the introduction of where featured ingredient explanations are located and suggestions for buying and storing rare ingredients.- index!- weekly meal planners with shopping lists that minimize how many ingredients must be bought. Buying many ingredients that I only need small amounts for make following the A blood type diet much more expensive and harder to follow. Build the meal plans with cost and efficiency in mind. (ex: each week have 1 poultry, 1 fish, and 3 veggie dinners, with lunches that take into account leftovers from dinner)All in all I love this cook book! And I highly recommend it to my friends who like to eat and cook healthy meals. But shame on the publishers for not editing it appropriately. Poor editing really reduces the quality and usability of this book - especially for people who are trying to eat and cook healthy for the first time.

Some interesting recipe ideas

This recipe book I would say is more geared towards the American kitchen, however it's useful for ideas. I don't think I will be using alot of the recipes though.

Fabulous!

This book is what I have been looking for for years! Finally, a diet that suits me! I read the descriptions of each type at the beginning while waiting for my blood test kit to arrive and felt sure I must be an A as it could have been a description of me. The test came and, sure enough, I am an A! It's a big change, and I'm taking it slowly, but I am already feeling the benefit. I would recommend unreservedly.

Very disappointed. No proper index

Very disappointed. No proper index, which makes it a pain to use. Blood type A supposed to be mainly vegetarian, yet the main meals are mostly meat based. Would not recommend.
