Revised Review
Please read the revised review! My apologies to the author. The original review and my revised statements follow.6/29/2012 - I really wanted to use this book to learn Camel based upon the comments I read. However the book is based on Camel 2.5.0 that is so old it is no longer available for download from Apache or any of the mirror sites. As of 6/29/2012, Camel 2.9.2 is the latest available. The 2.5 links don't work. :-( Don't waste your money!!!6/30/2012 - I received a comment from the author. It appears that access that I could not achieve from work are available to me from my home computer when I'm not behind a firewall. I have checked again and the same is still true. I can access 2.5.0 from Apache when I'm not behind a firewall but STILL cannot access when I'm logged into work. My employer IT department is blocking what I need. That is no reflection on the book. From my home PC I am able to access the 2.5.0 distribution. My collegue tell me that I should not expect significant changes from 2.5 to 2.7, 2.8, or 2.9.2 with respect to the book and at the same time recommend this book. I will continue to investigate and update/revise this review as needed. What I have read so far is easily understood and well written.I purchased the paperback version. With this book comes a secret code to download a kindle version from Manning. This is the second Manning book I've purchased that has this feature and I really like that. I don't have to lug books from home to work everyday.

I'm a Camel pro now, thanks to this book
Let's face it. Technical books suck. As each month goes by, they become less accurate. Most technical books are a waste of money compared to free, frequently updated content on the web.But Camel in Action is different.Camel is constantly growing and changing. As of February 2014, the first edition (2011) is still fresh. Camel's online documentation will never be replaced by any book. However, there are things you can do with books that you still can't do online. Thumbing and skimming topics, and going back and forth between topics, is critical for learning a subject as large as Camel. As other reviewers here have already pointed out, Camel in Action is well organized, clearly written, and contains excellent technical diagrams. It can be digested well by Java programmers who have zero Camel knowledge.I especially appreciate the downloadable eBook in various formats at no charge, which is handy when I'm on the road.

Nice work!
I read this book from cover to cover and I very much liked this book. The writing style is clear and lots of examples are provided with maven integration that makes it easy for the reader to follow the concepts being illustrated. Camel is a framework that implements all Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIPs) out of the box and as such it offers a lot of value to organization dealing with these types of problems. In addition to features of Camel, deployment options and monitoring strategies are also covered in reasonable detail which is nice. Although this book teaches one to use the EIPs in Camel, it does not provide a good description of the EIPs themselves, so one might want to supplement this with a book on EIPs. Note that at the time of writing of this book, Camel was at version 2.5 but as of now it is at version 2.7 - on the website code samples are provided for both 2.5 and 2.7 versions separately. I have no hesitation recommending this book to anyone who is interested in Camel.

A good tutorial
More of a tutorial than a reference manual, this book seems fine. It introduces Camel concepts in a fashion typical of Manning's "In Action" series. However, this does leave concepts scattered across the manual when you go back to use it for reference. Overall, this seems to be the best Camel book available. Recommended.

A awesome book on both Camel and Enterprise Integration Patterns in general...
In a nutshell: This is a great resource for any developers working with Camel, and also any developers who wants to learn more about, and indeed leverage, Enterprise Integration Patterns (EIP) within their code.Camel in Action walks you though the entire process of using EIP within your application, and explains the core concepts behind both Camel and EIP using an amazingly focused and clear approach. You will learn all about messages, routing, transformations, error handling and testing within the first two sections alone. The third section nicely covers all the advanced topics that developers utilising Camel in their day job will no doubt encounter, such as transactions, concurrency, scalability, monitoring and deploying to name a few.The book does a great job of covering core EIP concepts, and you can learn even more fromย Enterprise Integration Patterns: Designing, Building, and Deploying Messaging Solutions (Addison-Wesley Signature) ย which was ground-breaking when first published, and was the book that introduced EIP to the world (and is still the definitive reference). If you're using the Spring framework for implementing your main application then it will be worth having a look at Spring Integration, which offers very similar functionality as Camel, and allows you to implement EIP without leaving your current framework. If you do decide to use Spring Integration then I would recommend checking out the sister book to this oneย Spring Integration in Action It could be argued that Camel in Action contains a more logical flow with introducing and using EIP principles, and with Camel in Action the journey through the book feels very much like learning to leverage EIP within your applications by utilising Camel. Spring Integration in Action reads more like using Spring to implement functionality that happens to be based on EIP. This is a subtle difference, and has both advantages and disadvantages. Readers familiar with Spring (and indeed actively developing with Spring) will probably get up to speed quicker with Spring Integration In Action, but developers who aren't familiar with Spring (or who want to learn more about core EIP principles) will ultimately get more out of Camel In Action. In summary, another great 'in Action' book that is destined to become the definitive reference for Camel, and if you're looking to learn this framework or utilise EIP within your application then you can't go wrong by buying this book.
