FANTASTIC ALL-ROUND KNIFE
I really like everything about this knife. I had one years ago. Even though it was designed to be a hunting tool, it will tackle any job that one could reasonably expect a compact knife to do. The overall length is around nine inches, which is about the size of many folding knives when open. Weighting in at a comfortable 6 ounces, it is light and easy to manipulate. I have folding knives that weigh more than this. The blade is thick (5mm) and strong. I especially like the San Mai manufacturing process. San Mai essentially means "three layers", and this style has been in use by the Japanese for over 1000 years. One cannot argue with success. What we have here is a piece of hard carbon steel in between two layers of softer steel. What this does is give you a strong and durable cutting edge and enough flexibility to avoid damage from heavy use. It's true that some modern "super steels" offer similar capabilities, but I have found that in some cases the cutting edges are brittle and can lead to problems. The San Main process is still used today by some of the top custom bladesmiths. The tip of the knife is pointed and sharp. It will pierce easily, and is backed up by enough steel to be strong and resistant to damage. The cutting edge is shaving-sharp. The handle is a thing of joy because it's comfortable and gives the user a secure grip in all environments: wet, cold, you name it. It is secure. While many Cold Steel knives are now made in Taiwan, this model is still made in Japan. At least the one I just received is. I like this aspect a lot because the quality and manufacturing processes are superb. The Japanese absolutely know how to make high-quality blades. Don't shy away from the Taiwan blades because Taiwan is not China. The CS knives I've seen coming from Taiwan are on par with those from Japan and the United States. Some people don't care for the sheaths that CS knives come with, but I have found them to be just fine for most applications. If you need a sheath for military or other extreme-use situations, then I would invest in a Spec Ops brand sheath and be in fat city. When you sheath this knife and then push a bit harder, it locks into place very well. It's not going to fall out. The sheath attaches to a nylon strap that itself attaches to one's belt. While not a heavy duty system, it does what it's supposed to do. For those wanting to use this an an EDC item, you can remove the nylon strap from the sheath and attach a belt clip. It works beautifully. Dollar for dollar, the price is also quite attractive. I have had knives costing a lot more than this that realistically were not any better. This is not a $1000 safe queen. It's a highly versatile working tool designed for hunters, campers, backpackers, and military applications. When you compare features, quality, and price, this truly becomes one of the very best bargains on the market today. I'm one of these guys who has been there and done that, so it takes a lot to impress me, and the CS Master Hunter does just that. Be safe out there and God Bless.

Favorite knife
Okay. So you might be wondering why you need this knife. I will tell you. But first off, let me remind you that this is my opinion. Everyone believes something different and has a different opinion. So don't let anything I say offend you. I am 17 years old and my Hunter has field-dressed, skinned, and processed several deer and cleaned countless dove, many pheasants and even a turkey. My dad has had one at least as long as I've been alive and has cleaned more deer than I've ever seen with it. In fact, he bought another one because he liked it so much. This is one of the best hunting knives that money can buy, if not the best. First, why you don't want to buy other knives: 1. Cheap knives- Most people have the Schrade, Gerber, knockoff brand, etc. that cost $10 or less. You get what you pay for: a dull piece of *#%@ knife that doesn't hold an edge, won't sharpen well and breaks and chips easily. The sheath gets torn up quickly and the handle breaks and/or has no comfort, whatsoever. Unless you plan on never using it again, there is no sense in NOT getting a more expensive knife. This knife has a quality steel that is easy to sharpen and holds an edge. It is 3/16" thick. That will hold up and more to any normal hunting situations, even survival if your hunting trip goes awry. In fact, I use it to break the pelvic bone by pounding on the end of the handle with my fist. Also, the handle is awesome. It is comfortable and grips your hand even when wet. So if the handle gets rain on it or gets bloody, you can still use it without fear of slippage. The one downside is that the high carbon blade rusts more easily than Stainless Steel. But some silicone spray before it's put away will prevent rust. 2. More expensive knives- This knife is perfect for the average hunter it is a good-looking knife in design, but I will admit that the handle could look better. But what's important is you know that your money is being spent on functional, hardy Kray-ex instead of wood or bone which does not have nearly as much grip and will likely not last as long as other materials. Besides, the Master Hunter is not so pretty that you don't want to get it dirty or bloody. 3. Longer or shorter knives- You definitely don't want any longer knives. Longer knives make it harder to make those precision cuts and they are harder to carry. Shorter knives are alright, but I like the size of this because the the handle is very comfortable, the larger size is more useful in possible survival situations, and also, to be frank, the size of the blade compared to the handle make it look good, unlike the large handle to small blade ratio of the Cold Steel Pendleton Hunter. To be honest, if I could go back to when I bought this knife, I might choose a different one . The only reason would be so I could buy the guthook version of this knife or the new version with the American 3V steel and the black blade coating. This will always be my favorite hunting knife and is in fact my favorite knife, period. I hope this helped in your decision on choosing a knife.

I am impressed.
Cold steel makes some great stuff, and some cheap stuff. Sometimes their cheap stuff is great, and sometimes it's not. If you account for blade steel, this is actually pretty cheap for a knife. Not too bad. (compare to Fallkniven, but also realize the quality difference, fallkniven is higher quality). I purchased this because it's a good steel, good handle, and kydex sheath. My sheath was way LOOSE. I had to modify it with some wire and a few screws to make it tight enough. Others have really tight sheaths. seems hit or miss (come on cold steel, a little more consistency with sheaths would be good). It's an excellent size. Handle is comfortable and gave me no sore spots after carving and working with knife for a few hours. not so sure it's a hunting knife so much as a survival knife. Blade length and shape lends itself really well to the overall outdoors application. it's a THICK blade. I like that. Makes me feel comfortable doing larger tasks with no fear of breaking it. Some pretty major complaints i have heard are with the factory edge, that's why I resharpened mine. If it comes dull that DOES NOT mean it's a bad knife, means you need to sharpen it (which you should be able to do REGARDLESS of how it comes from factory). as with other reviewers, my factory edge was not great, so I used a worksharp knife sharpener on this in order to give it a convex edge. it's fantastic. holds an edge so well and is so sharp that it is literally SCARY. I sharpened it a few months ago, did abunch of woodwork camping and various cutting tasks. it is still sharp and cuts magnificently. Another major complaint is that the handle is not perfectly sealed to the blade (if you get one, you'll see). Very tiny gaps appear between rubber and tang. Not a big deal for me, but that does bother some people (look at price compared to competition, i say it's still great value for money). Blade is good length. Not short, but not long. My brother got the srk (in Aus 8, which i feel is worse than the san mai), and it is definitely a tad long. But the blade geometry being only a partial grind instead of full flat ground makes bating a bit easier, otherwise i prefer the master hunters full flat grind. If you like the looks, want a stainless steel knife that can take abuse, cold steels ridiculous bravado and showy attitude doesn't bother you, then get it. it does not disappoint.

Quality, quality, and more quality
Ok so here's the deal I just got this knife a few days ago and haven't done much cutting with it, as yet! I am quite impressed with this japanese made marvel! The blade thickness is quite beefy and the sharpness out of the box was astounding! At first I worried that perhaps the kraton handle would be to grippy and not feel well in the hand, that is not the case and the checkering in the handle is really quite nice and comfy! This is without a doubt the best knife I have ever purchased and wish I had done it much sooner! I have been quite taken with cutlery since childhood and own some very nice knives, but had I bought this one first I would have never needed another one, this one fits the bill for absolutely everything. Hunting and fishing, trapping, and even survival pretty much anything you would use a knife for would be a breeze with this knife!!!! I especially like the drop point blade design as it is my favorite design! Also the sheath is a pleasant surprise the knife squeezes into the sheath and wont fall out if inverted! the concealex must be like the kydex material the other companies boast so much about! I have paracorded a sharpening stone to the sheath and intend to have this knife with me for every adventure in the woods from now on! Oh yeah the square edge on the back of the blade will work perfectly with a fire steel! In closing you just can't get much better than this one! The san mai 111 is amazing too! If you want an excellent knife at a reasonable price look no further THIS IS THE ONE! GOOD LUCK! UPDATE!! this was my go to knife till I got my Fallkniven F1 it is a bit more expensive but a much better knife! The master hunter wont be seeing as much use these days! It is still a good knife but cant hold a candle to the F1!

The perfect field knife
A great all-around knife for hunting or general use. A traditionally designed blade with a nice grippy handle. The laminated blade is exceptionally sharp. Because of the edge’s hardness I would not use a baton with this knife, but otherwise I don’t think you can find a better field knife for the price.

Manufacture marks don't match pictures on website.
The knife is great but truly I don't know if I received a genuine cold steel manufacture or if GSM has completely flipped everything around. The blade is manufactured in Taiwan now apparently not Japan. It doesn't say VG-1 OR VG-10 SAN MAI , it simply says SAN MAI. The lanyard pin at bottom of the handle is brass like the 3V version, instead of stainless like the amazon photo shows which indicates japanese san mai version. The blade itself is excellent and has even plunge grinds and a decent factory edge, doesnt bite skin but it shaves a bit and cuts paper fine. the tip is concentric and the sheath fits very well and evenly. The san mai lamination is also very well done. I just am confused at to the potential visual indicators GSM has done to this blade and it casts some doubt into my mind about the legitimacy of the manufacture. Just some insight from a recent buyer 2025

Great all around fixed blade
This knife combines a simple, traditional hunting knife design that is practical (for its purpose) with a beautiful fit and finish that not only looks good, but feels good in the hand. The kraton handle on this knife is very grippy and gives you a good purchase, different and better than the handle on my CS Recon Scout. The full flat grind blade has a nice 3/16 of an inch thickness of VG-1 laminated Japanese steel, and is nicely polished. While I haven't vigorously tested the edge yet, it came razor sharp out of the box (nice job Cold Steel) and cut 550 paracord like butter. The sheath is also practical in its design and materials, basically a durable hardened plastic with a nylon belt attachment that can attach to your belt without taking it off. Also can be mounted onto a pack through the lashing holes. Sheath has better than good retention on the knife so it won't slip out (better retention than my Recon Scout sheath). Also, the spine of the blade has very sharp corners and throws awesome sparks on a firesteel. Most of my fixed blades are made of carbon steel, so I wanted to find a good stainless one that I could use for camping/food prep and even throw in my survival pack and not be concerned with it rusting. Obviously, this would also make a good hunting knife, but probably better served for larger game such as deer. For the money, I think this is one of the best fixed blade knives in its size class that you can buy.

Mid-range “do it all” knife
The Master Hunter in VG-10 San Mai steel is a solid knife. The steel is highly rust resistant, especially as compared to the more expensive CPM-3V version, however edge retention and toughness go to the 3V. Out of the box, the knife was shaving sharp, as it should be. Easily passed the paper and arm-hair shaving tests. After stropping it a bit, the edge was amazing. The spine is squared off nicely and will spark a ferro-rod with ease. No negative experience yet, but VG-10 is known to be a little brittle, so there is some concern about the edge chipping, especially if you are treating it roughly. I already knew that about VG-10 steel, so this is not a real negative for me. The sheath is solid, though not spectacular. It can ride up on you a bit. Retention is good, and there is a strap to hold the knife in place if you are worried about it being dislodged somehow. The handle texture is nice and “grippy,” though I do wonder a bit if it will last for years and years. I do wish the full tang steel protruded from the bottom just a bit instead of being wrapped with the outer material. Overall, I really like this knife. It will serve me well in hunting and light camping duties. Probably won’t ask it to baton a 4” branch (2” yes) or pry open a door. That’s what survival knives are for, not hunting knives. Definitely worth the $94 it is going for these days.

An exceptionally well-made, durable, reliable and comfortable knife!
I skinned out, gutted and quartered a large cow elk with this knife, and had a back-up Buck knife with me but never even needed it. Sure, the Master Hunter was a bit dull after cutting through all that hair, but wow the knife did an amazing job without me stopping to sharpen it, not even once! I was so impressed with it that when I came home I immediately bought a second Master Hunter. This is the only knife I will use now, it is so comfortable to use and I absolutely love it! It's also got a very safely designed handle in my opinion and balances exceptionally well. I never cut or nicked my bare hands, not even once, and I had to use it in low light conditions. A really well made durable and reliable knife! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
