Nick Drake: A Treasury

Now we are in 5.1, and we are everywhere.
Of course, this material was superb before it was cleaned up (as it was for the reissues a few years back) to make it sound even bryter. Any collection of this quality is worth 5 stars. The key thing here for existing fans is the value of the 5.1 mix. Well, its OK as it is neither invasive or inventive. There aren't any "we've got 5.1 and we're gonna use it" features that sometimes afflict these products (with the instruments panned wide to all corners) but I don't feel that it leaves me anymore enlightened by the music. With only 8 tracks on the original masters, I guess the opportunities to go crazy are more limited.Temptingly, there is, unlisted, a previously unreleased bonus track, Plasir d'Amour (originally recorded as part of the Pink Moon sessions and reportedly intended to start side 2). However, like so much of the material for that album, it only lasts about 30 seconds so this disc isn't work buying for that alone.Overall though, it's a good 'best of the original albums' and a great gift for the uninitiated or those who just don't have room for all of Nick's work.

Good in Surround too
While familiar with Nick Drake by reputation I was drawn to this album (as was reviewer Mr Fipple) as it was available in Hybrid SACD format - and at a good price. The surround sound is very good - particularly on the Robert Kirby arrangements (see also Shelagh McDonald who he did stunning work for); there is nothing "for effect" and I'd concur with that reviewer's sound quality comments. The album is a good mix from the few LPs which seem to vary in style - but then I don't know the tracks omitted. Probably enough for many, a good introduction to those like me new to him, or surround versions for those who have it all anyway.

Not to be missed
Probably one of the best SACDs ever released. It's breathtaking to hear the details revealed by the remastering and the clarity offered by the discrete and tasteful surround sound. If you like songs by Suzanne Vega, Leonard Cohen, Stephen Duffy, David Sylvian etc. but haven't heard of Nick Drake, buy this album. Once you have digested this, you'll want to get Tuck Box.

Worth giving a chance
This was my first exposure to Nick Drake and I didn't know quite what to expect. On my first hearing I have to admit I wasn't too impressed - it did not immediately blow me away. However, I gave it a chance and listened to it again and soon found it growing on me. Now, I really enjoy listening to it late at night. The SACD treatment is unusual in that for some tracks the vocals are coming out of the rear speakers. Interesting effect, not unappealing. The acoustic guitar sound is very clear and rich.I think my favourite tracks are 'Poor Boy' (I love the arrangement), the two 'Hazy Jane' tracks and River Man.

It is a treasury
Nick Drake's sister Gabriella is convinced he didn't commit suicide and that his overdose death was accidental. Whatever the real cause this album just goes to show what a fantastic talent he was - and if you only want to buy one. Buy this one.
