The ancients believed that Lord Subrahmanya will come to bless us in the form of a snake. So, they used to worship snakes to respect the god and avoid any problems. In ancient times, people used to go to the ant hills, usually the home for snakes. After cleaning the surroundings, laying garlands, pooja was performed to please the snake inside. They used to bound a turmeric thread around the snake's home. Then milk was poured inside the hill and eggs were put for the snake to eat. Next day, the worshippers would come back to take the sacred thread and tie it to their hands. According to Puranic scriptures, Brahma's son Kashyapa had four wives. The first wife gave birth to Devas; the second to Garudas; the third to Nagas (snakes); and the fourth to Daityas. Nag Panchmi festival is celebrated throughout India and falls on the fifth day of the moonlit fortnight of the month of Sravana, which falls in the month of July or August.
