Excellent collection, but not complete
Finzi's wonderful songs are some of the finest by any English composer, as more and more singers have come to discover. Influenced by Parry and Vaughan Williams, he was never as harmonically adventurous as his contemporaries yet crafted a style all his own. His keen poetic sense, adeptness at setting the difficult poems of Thomas Hardy (not forgetting the superb Shakespeare songs), and imaginative piano writing have combined to produce remarkable music. This volume is titled Collected, not Complete; I give 4 stars rather than 5 only because the editors had a chance to present *all* the songs in high-voice versions (and same for low voice in the companion volume), but chose to transpose only some of the low sets into high. The sets "To a Poet" and "I Said to Love" are found here transposed to high voice for the first time, but Finzi's two greatest mature song sets ("Earth and Air and Rain" and "Before and After Summer") are absent. Not every song works satisfactorily in transposition, but I doubt that is the reason... This seems a missed opportunity. Still, it is great to have these volumes, which I hope will attract more singers, accompanists and teachers to Finzi's compelling songs.
