Mastermind

Mastermind is the eighth full-length studio album by the legendary New Jersey Stoner Rock band Monster Magnet. It was released in 2010 and is seen as something of a return to form by many fans as it is one of the band's genuinely best albums to date, despite having been released so chronologically far from their early work.Stylistically speaking, Mastermind is the heaviest, hardest and doomiest Monster Magnet album to date and there is a very clear Black Sabbath influence on display on a lot of the tracks, most of which are mid-paced or even slow. There is still variety to be found however; there are two tracks of jangly chord bashing towards the album's close, two very intense atmospheric build ups and two faster songs just after the album opens up that raise the tempo in an energetic fashion before the album settles back down into its doomy groove, as well as a third halfway through that shakes you up and stops you getting complacent.Singer and primary songwriter Dave Wyndorf has consistently been one of the genre's finest ever lyricists, to the point where it is one of the band's distinguishing features, and this album is far from a disappointment in that regard. As usual; interesting observations, black humour and some almost depressing philosophical points all mix together in well-written and mutli-faceted songs that reward repeat-listening.When this is combined with the variety of vocal approaches from bluesy drawls and spacey pronouncements to metallic roars by way of sly and sarcastic punk deliveries and the occasional melody, it makes for a brilliant album that you can listen to a lot without getting bored, in which you can discover something new every time and which should be at least considered for a place in any fan's collection. This is not the sound of a band phoning it in, it is a band charged up and really laying into it hard.Its not all super heavy riffs and biker metal production though; the band still incorporate some of the psychedelic sounding guitar effects and additional percussion from the early stuff and touches of electronics from the mid-period material, albeit very subtly, into the hard rock based music. In some ways Mastermind is unlike any other Monster Magnet album due to the precise ratio of its influences and approaches to songwriting and yet in other ways its kind of like the summation of their entire career since it mixes it all together.Highlights include the Nine Inch Nails-esque `Time Machine' which has some genuinely beautiful guitar, as well as the energetic and lyrically superb `Bored With Sorcery' and the doomy `When Planes Fall Out Of The Sky,' which boasts some of the album's heaviest riffs.Overall, Mastermind is one of the best Monster Magnet albums available, no caveat. Its certainly the one with the best reputation in a long time, and although I personally think that the band never got bad, it still gives off those feelings of reaffirmation that all the best comeback albums do.Its just got a certain inexplicable spark both of creativity and power and I'd highly recommend that any old fans who've given up on the band check it out and see if it wins them back.Basically though, if you like Monster Magnet at all you should probably try this out, especially if you like their heavier stuff. If you are a new fan its definitely not a bad place to start either, although maybe try it in conjunction with a `classic' as well, because they're definitely the kind of band where hearing one album wouldn't be enough to really `get' what the band are all about.

For long-time Monster Magnet fans like myself, the announcement of this new album was greeted half by joy and half by anxiety. It's a horrible feeling to watch a band you've grown up with and loved for years slowly lose their touch.This feeling was exacerbated by 4-way Diablo, which I really didn't think was to their usual standards.However, and I say this with relief and jubilation, Monster Magnet are in no danger of losing their touch anytime soon. Mastermind is absolutely amazing. It's up there with their very best albums. In my mind is has achieved the impossible and perfectly integrated MMs two perceived styles: the stoner early days, and the power rock from the later albums.Every song is full of beautiful creamy reverby guitar, both distorted and clean, there are some fantastic grooves and hooks. I think the vocals are better than on any other album. All of the songs work brilliantly live - I get the impression most of the songs were written with the band all jamming together. This is a bit of a departure from some of the more 'studioy' albums of recent, but it seems to have worked brilliantly.Dave's lyrics are outstanding as always, and the whole album will overwhelm you with the pure rock goodness, warming nostalgia, and a very strong optimism that rock isn't dead - it hasn't even really got going yet.\m/ \m/

Das neue CD- Cover erinnert an das umstrittene "God says no". Und die Musik? Na, eher nicht. "Mastermind" ist auch weder so spacig- psychedelisch wie "Spine of God" noch so knallig wie "Powertrip". Am Ehesten erinnert es an... tja, eine Fortsetzung von "4- Way Diablo", um ehrlich zu sein. Etwas entschlossener und überzeugender vielleicht. Gelegentlich find ich die Drums etwas druck- und einfallsarm. Da wird solide gerockt und gegroovt, aber für einen Meilenstein reicht es diesmal wieder nicht. "All outta nothing" und "When the Planes fall from the Sky" find ich sehr gelungen; das sollen dann auch meine Anspieltipps sein. Ich hab den Kauf nicht bereut, aber würde die CD nicht zum Musskauf hochstilisieren. Kann man haben, muss nicht.

Et voilà, avec ce titre-là, vous comprenez tout de suite que je suis en total désaccord avec le premier commentaire de cette page. Désaccord profond car pour moi, 4-Way Diablo n'est pas un album excellent. Il est même plutôt médiocre. Les goûts et les couleurs...Oui, pour moi, ce "Mastermind" ramène le groupe à sa période la plus fructueuse en terme de compositions, à savoir celle de la trilogie Dopes To Infinity,Powertrip et God Says No. Donc, si pour vous, il ne s'agit pas de la meilleure période du groupe, autant ne pas vous attarder sur cet album.Ce "Mastermind" est l'album de tous les plus : plus lourd ("Hallucination bomb") , plus seventies ("Perish in flames"), plus rock ("All outta nothin") , plus psyché ("The titan who cried...") que tous les autres. Et toujours avec ce groove inimitable estampillé Monster Magnet ("Mastermind", "Bored with sorcery"...) Cela en fait peut-être également l'album du groupe le plus varié. Le Stoner au meilleur de sa forme. Ca suinte le bon gros Rock par tous les pores, ça sent la graisse et l'asphalte. On ne peut que succomber à l'invitation de la vache customisée de la pochette et d'envoyer les gaz. Vous avez ici la BO idéale pour traverser les States d'Est en Ouest, en Harley de préférence !A défaut de Harley et de voyage aux States, cet album va tout de même vous faire voyager dans les grands espaces ("When the planes fall from the sky") quelque soit l'endroit où vous l'écouterez.En prime, l'édition limitée offre deux titres bonus dont un ("Watch me fade") absolument monstrueux. Pour quelques euros de plus, ce serait dommage de ne pas en profiter.Je ne suis pas un "fan endurci" du groupe, Monster Magnet est juste un groupe que j'apprécie parmi tant d'autres. Et si depuis Monolithic Baby !, j'avoue que je m'étais un peu désintéressé de leurs productions, ce "Mastermind" a réveillé mon intérêt pour ce groupe. En toute objectivitée,je ne suis pas un fan à proprement parlé de monster magnet,je n'ai que 2albums du groupe(monolithic baby et celui-ci),et quelques chansons du groupe que j'ai entendu dans différents sampler ou b.o de film(matrix,la fiancée de chucky)...mais je suis fan de stoner metal,et de rock/heavy/PUNK des seventies(hier soir je me suis couché sur the stooges,motorhead et the ramones...vous parlez d'une soirée rock'n'roll),et c'est ce qui me plait chez le monstre magnétique,cette façon qu'ils onts de rendre hommage à tous ces grands-groupes pré-cités,sans les copier pour autant,en ayant une patte,un vrai sens de la créativitée qui n'appartient qu'à eux...à l'instar de qotsa(les meilleurs dans le genre!!!)ou nashville pussy,monster magnet est parfaitement ancré dans l'air du temps,tout en jouant une musique qui se serait parfaitement adaptés aux 70's!!!Pour en revenir à ce"mastermind",eh bien c'est un trés bon album de heavy/rock avec ses petites imperfections(quelques morceaux aurait pu étre un peu plus court pour gagner en intensité),mais quand ça envoie du bois,c'est clair ça déchire grave!!!(gods and punks,pour ne citer que celle-ci).En revanche la prod'est géniale et parfaitement adaptée à l'ambiance enfumante(enfumée!!!)du combo!!!tous les instruments sonts parfaitement en place,et dave wyndorf méme si il à pris quelques kilogs n'a rien perdu de sa voie,qui n'est pas sans me rappeller un certain blaze bayley par moments(cet avis n'engage que moi...),une voie réellement prenante et qui saurait presque se faire inquiétante sur les morceaux les plus"doom"du disque(l'ombre du sabbath noir,plane sur certains passages...est-ce du à la"sweet leaf"???)...vous l'aurez compris cet album n'a sans doute pas était l'album de 2010,mais quand on sais ce que le groupe à traversez comme galére,et dave en particulier...on à tous de méme affaire ici à un skeud qui tiens parfaitement la route(66!!!)et que l'on ressort de temps à autres juste pour le plaisir de se prendre une bonne décharge de rock...comme je suis en train de le faire en ce moment.16sur20!!!

MONSTER MAGNET repose sur les épaules du chanteur et guitariste Dave Wyndorf. or, cela fait quelques années que l'on sent le bonhomme un peu fragile. Après des débuts merveilleux d'un Hard Rock fortement psychédélique ("Dopes To Infinity" demeure un chef d'oeuvre du genre), Wyndorf opta pour un son plus classique, des compositions plus carrées et plus classiques sur la triplette "Powertrip" (1998), "God Says No" (2001) et "Monolithic baby !" (2004). Le groupe y demeurait efficace mais avait perdu son mystère, son esprit d'aventure.Comme sur "4 Way Diablo" (2007), le groupe revient ici à une formule plus Rock, moins poseuse, plus juteuse, plus jouissive. Pour autant, si on ne s'ennuie jamais, on se dit que "Mastermind" ne renoue pas avec la veine audacieuse des grandes heures.Alain Lavanne

Proportional zum Gewicht hat auch gleich wieder die Fähigkeit gute Songs zu schreiben zugenommen. Am Anfang war ich sehr skeptisch, da mir die letzten Alben nicht wirklich gefallen haben. Es waren zweifelsohne gute Rocksongs - nur will man sowas von Monster Magnet hören?Nach den ersten paar Durchläufen waren dann meine Zweifel ausgeräumt weil - siehe da - das psychedelische zum teil wieder zurückgekehrt ist. "Hallucination Bomb" (alleine die Lyrics sind der Hammer), "Dig that Hole", "Gods and Punks" (mit AC/DC - Anleihen), sowie "Mastermind" hätte man so nicht mehr erwartet. Leider gibt es gegen Ende ein, zwei schwächere Songs ("Ghost Story z.B. versucht in einer Liga wie "Dead Christmas" zu spielen, schafft es jedoch überhaupt nicht), die aber jedoch den Gesamteindruck nicht wirklich schmälern.Für mich ist Mastermind der legitime Nachfolger von der "Dopes to Infinity". Die "Superjudge" bleibt auf jeden Fall unerreicht.Am 05. Dezember habe ich Monster Magnet in Wien live gesehen. Dazu zwei Sachen:1.) Es ist zwar schade, daß Ed Mundell nach 18 Jahren ausgestiegen ist, allerdings muß ich zugeben, daß der aktuelle Gitarrist Garret Sweeny seine Sache ausgezeichnet macht.2.) Da MM auf Tour auch ältere Sachen gespielt haben (z.B. "Brainstorm" von der Superjudge), merkt man wie gut sich die neuen Stücke einfügen - und auch live richtig, richtig krachen. Bezeichnend auch, daß "4 way diablo", "Monolithic Baby" und "God says no" überhaupt keine Beachtung in der Setlist fanden.

J'ai bien aimé « dopes to infinity », même « power trip », j'écoute facilement « super judge » « god says no » ou « monolithic baby ». Ce groupe, dit de hard-rock stoner, nous plombe les esgourdes avec ce nouvel album « mastermind », par des développements sans grandes inspirations qui s'appuient sur une ryhtmique percutante, lourde, la voix de Dave Wyndorf, gutturale à souhait et les solos d'Ed Mundell qui cisaillent le tout sur les riffs rageurs de Phil Caivano. Rien de nouveau à l'horizon, les rockers de New Jersey assurent leur space rock gras et couillu dans la lignée de leurs précédentes productions au point de se répéter. Les fans se jetteront dessus, moi je sature. ( 12 titres / 60mn13 )

J'ai découvert Monster Magnet avec Monolithic Baby !, qui m'a rudement secoué. Qui peut résister à Slut Machine ? Dans la foulée le Greatest hits m'a montré d'autres aspects du groupe, tout aussi jouissifs (voilà : MM est un groupe JOUISSIF !) et 4 Way Diablo m'a un chouia déçu, malgré le chef d'oeuvre I'm calling you. Alors le petit nouveau, s'il ne se laisse pas aussi facilement apprivoiser que Monolithic Baby ! s'incruste dans le cerveau écoute après écoute et vous rend HEUREUX ! Si si ! Les chansons sont variées, remarquablement écrites, et dégagent cette sorte de joie qu'était capable de procurer un groupe comme Aerosmith par exemple. Je me demande d'ailleurs si Dave Wyndorf n'est pas le Steven Tyler qui nous reste... Sauf qu'il chante mieux ! Mais la gouaille (la gouape ?..), les feulements de chat en rut gorgé de viagra et boosté aux stéroïdes, c'est bien la même famille. Celle qui vous fait aimer la vie, vous fait croire que finalement tout est possible, et ne fera jamais la couv'. Cet élan vital qui vous colle un sourire idiot sur la tronche et vous fait taper du pied (ou le volan si vous êtes en voiture !). Vous, je sais pas, mais moi je file commander ceux qui me manquent...

Würde ich MM nicht kennen, im Plattenladen stehen und zum ersten Mal Mastermind hören, würde ich die Scheibe kaufen, weil mir auf Anhieb 3 Stücke sehr gefallen hätten und mir dies normalerweise für einen Kauf ausreicht (Gods and punks, Time machine, 10 million miles away). Diese Stücke sind große, ganz große Kunst und das ist schon mal was. Das ganze Album zu bewerten, tue ich mich schwer...auch nach 3 maligem Durchlauf. Man merkt Wyndorf und Co haben bei der Composition und Aufnahme ihrer Stücke alles gegeben, jedenfalls mehr als auf 4-way D., aber das ist auch nicht schwer. Trotzdem wirken einige Stücke immer noch arg bemüht und verkrampft. Ich hoffe, dass sich mir der Rest auch noch erschließen wird. Wenn nicht ... na ja...alleine das, was mir bisher gefällt, reicht schon mal aus, um Mastermind 4 Sterne zu geben und das OHNE Fanbonus!

Da über die Platte schon ausführlich rezensiert wurde, bleibt mir nur eins zu schreiben:Klasse Scheibe die, mal wieder, nichts missen lässt. Mittlerweile gehören Monster Magnet wohl zu den Großen des Rock `n` Rolls.

前作から3年ぶりに帰還したNEWアルバム！トリップ感満載で重量級な1曲目から、パンキッシュな2曲目と、出だしから畳み掛けます！メロディーも実に充実していて、個人的には「POWERTRIP」や「GOD SAYS NO」辺りのキャッチーさと、「DOPES TO INFINITY」の作風をより幅を持たせた感じで、待ちわびていたファンは納得出来るアルバムに仕上がってます！また初心者にも入りやすいアルバムだと思うので、オススメ致します。でもこの後、ギターのエド・マンデルが脱退してしまったのは痛いなー

Monster Magnet's new LP simply rocking! With 2 bonus tracks on the vinyl version, the Iggy meets Hawkwind storm of carefully composed psyche never lets up. Monster Magnet in 2010 are a litle less jam-oriented than in the past, but that is no bad thing. Songs such as the lead single "Gods and Punks" serve up a platter of build and release with huge drums and fuzzed out solos that leave the listener breathless. The introspective title track is sinister and evocative, fleshed out with mellotron flourishes. Wyndorf's personality is as big as he is these days. Thanks for survivin' Dave!

Die ersten 3 Lieder der Platte warten mit Bassläufen am Anfang auf, welche knächzen und knarren...Garage trifft Psychedelic..nicht schlecht - aber die Songs kommen im Laufe Ihrer Spielzeit nicht recht in Wallung.Ein Monsterriff...wie bei Dopes to Infinity vermisst man...es kommt auch die gesamte Platte nicht! Nach dem Song Gods and Punks kommt der Mittelteil des Albums als kompletter langweiliger Reinfall daher...nicht ein Song bleibt hängen, bis der Song Ghost Story kommt!!Nach einem Durchlauf weiß ich nicht so recht, was ich zu diesem Album sagen soll...mein Alltime Favorit ist Spine of God und Dopes to Infinity...Superjudge auch noch...Powertrip ist für die Masse...God says no...wie ein Vorredner sagte wieder etwas besser...!Also...wenn ihr MM nicht kennt...ist es eine gute Platte...wenn Ihr Spine of God mögt...Dopes to Infinity liebt...dann ist sie mittelprächtig..nicht mehr und nicht weniger!
