The Restless Heart
I love this book. Clay Remington has a gift for language and puts it to good use in this slender and beautiful volume of poetry. Remington's writing evokes vivid images, does so with remarkable economy and rewards repeated reading. "Hallways" is a profound meditation on old age and our debt to those who have nurtured us. "Kindred", about friendship, is deeply affecting and "Real" is about our terrible propensity to flee from what is. However, "Silence" and "Word" most clearly reveal the thread which ties this work together and gives it unity. These poems are filled with a longing for God and a desire for intimacy with Him. After several readings of "The Soul's Sidewalk" I realized it reminded me of St. Augustine's famous observation found at the beginning of his autobiography. "You made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."
