Five Stars
The writing style is like a running inner monologue, it's eclectic and jarring but has an intentional effect.

Well written, but not a fun read...
I loved The Slap. This one, I think I'm not the target group (40s female). Too nihilistic & cynical for me, but well written and a good insight into the world of the characters.

Not for me!
This book may be appreciated by an other age group, but not me. What is there to say about constant drug abuse and drinking ?

gritty, depressing and at times left me feeling very low and physically ill! I hated it, but glad I read it
An exploration of a lost Greek migrant son, in working class Melbourne. Possibly finding solace in this underground world of hard drugs, sex, music and old films. He is lost and the story goes no where... There is no happy ending.. Just a repetitive life of a young man with no vocation, no family support, and in denial of his own self... It's horrid and real and dirty and depressing. I hate any story like this... There is no escapism for the reader as you watch Ari trying to escape...I hated reading this book, I found no pleasure in it... But on reflection of the power of the writing, I'm glad I did..

Start of a great career in writing
An early novel, some groundwork for his later works. A certain bitterness that continues through into later works. Such as the Slap and Barracuda both of which I really like, especially Barracuda. Hope Christos Tsiolkas continues on this trajectory.

Don't bother
Unfortunately I will never get that few hours of my life back. Felt let down at the end, no point to the whole book. Loved the slap, hated this.
