Where are they now?
A sketchy overview, but an Interesting aid to considering the current status of some of the brain supplements that were established or "up-and-coming" some 30+ years ago.

Dated
This book is a good introductory to nootropics (smart drugs), however, I found it a bit dated (maybe there's an updated release??). Also, I've found just a much information freely on-line via nootropic forums.

Read this book and get educated so you can stay healthy.
There is a latin proverb: "Mens sana in corpore sano", which means a "healthy brain lives in a healthy body".In this country the Big Pharma has all the business interests to sell you prescribed expensive drugs and has no intention for you to do well with over the counter medication. The doctors lie to people claiming that the nootropics are "nutritional suppliments or herbs" when in fact they are medications made with countless studies & research which is different than "nutritional suppliments" which don't have much studies but mostly folk traditions. This book will educate you on medication which can make you alert and keep your brain in good shape and if you don't eat junk food then you can enjoy a long and healthy life which doesn't fit the agenda of big pharma and the government which has to pay you social security longer than their estimated longevity. In Europe one can buy all these medications over the counter from any Pharmacies while in this country you have to buy them via mail order from all sorts of distribuitors and the prices are here at least 3 tiimes bigger than Europe.

Wonderful Book
Purchased this book in the 90’s. I had a terrible time retaining information...especially names. I studied the book and looked for the supplements and nootropics that had the best safety record and put together a program for myself. The results were more than stunning. I remember thinking that now I know how a normal brain should work.I did not keep up with the program, but my brain never returned to ground zero. However, I recently went through a great deal of chemo and finally an immunotherapy. Initially I did quite well with the chemo with respect to brain function. I’m now noticing some slight change. Time to review this book and research further as well. I’m very grateful to the author.I found the book to be well laid out and easy to access.

be careful
Pros: the book does contain some useful information.Cons: authors are dishonest. They intentionally hide some of the side effects of the drugs.Examples: fipexide has been linked to liver damage - the book says nothing, piracetam does have withdrawal symptoms - the book says the opposite, caffeine improves short term memory - the books says that there were "studies" that showed the opposite. I see the message: buy our "safe" drugs and stop drinking "very dangerous" coffee.BEFORE YOU BUY ANYTHING IN THIS BOOK, THOROUGHLY RESEARCH THE DRUG ON YOUR OWN.No wonder Ward Dean is now spending 7 year jail term for taxes evasion.

Well written.
I like Dean's writing style because it's very thorough but also precise. You can tell this is an area he has dedicated a large part of his career to understanding; it shows through in the detail. Lots of testimonials and very clear instructions. It's an old book but it has aged well and gives extra value over and above the sometimes vague (repetitive and often directly copied) information you will find online about all the supplements Dean covers here.If you're interested in smart drugs, this is a classic book that was WAY ahead of its time. Well worth picking up a second-hand copy.

Excellent book and full of useful information.

A bit outdated
Well written, but unfortunately rather outdated. For example, no info on popular nootropics like Armodafinil or Noopept
