Swastika [DVD]

Ground breaking 70s documentary
You may have seen most of the footage before but this is where it came from. The point of it all was certainly lost on the French

It's all history
The problem with reviewing a disc like this is one might come across as a Hitler loving fascist which I am certainly not. It is, however, a worth while addition to anyone's library who has an interest in the Second World War and who takes history objectively. The biggest problem with many books written about Hitler is that the writers tend to make it quite clear at the beginnngs that their impressions of the man include the mythical carpet chewing maniac thing so one can never be quite certain that the rest of the book is true history. This video (DVD) does seem to to give a fairly balanced view of the man and his policies and whether one accepts them or not it is, after all said an done, history. Not sure that the commentery is totally objective but it makes a change to see something that does not come to a conclusion at the beginning of the tale. WW2 historians should have a copy of this.

The man behind the monster??? ... It's all propaganda
This film was made to show the rise of the Nazi Party in pre - war Germany. There is no biased commentary. The film lets you see in pictures and sound a glimpse into Hitler's private life as well as his political ideologies. Due the lack of commentary the film-makers leave it up to the viewer to form their opinions on the content. However don't get sucked into believing Hitler wasn't all bad, Swastika was made from German propaganda films and home movies by Eva Braun. After watching the film, on the extras menu, is an interview with Albert Speer. He gives "his views" on Hitler & Braun .... interesting, but coming from a Nazi war criminal, time to form your own opinions again. All that said, Swastika is a good insight the birth of the Nazi party and well worth a watch and the extras are very interesting too.If you are interested in WW2 in any way, this is an interesting film to own.

Interesting
Not what you would expect, but it does look at things from a different perspective!

A lot of contemporary footage without commentary
"SWASTIKA is the most controversial documentary about Hitler ever made" How on Earth is this controversial? If you seen half a dozen documentaries you will have seen most of the content already including the 'intimate' Eva Braun stuff. The lack of commentary is refreshing but that doesn't make it the impartial film that some reviewers claim. Much of this was made as propaganda intended to give a positive image of pre-war Germany.Mediocre.

hmmm
Errr, very interesting point of view. & an attempt to be unbiased. but although it states not to tell ppl what to think...it kinda does w/ it's really dramatic & dark background music everytime hitler pops up. Soo, I love the interesting theory...but it only marginally succeeds. In my opinion.

Nazi Propaganda
This is like something you'd find playing at a KKK meeting.
