Gorilla carbonworks mold making starter kit for carbon fiber

Made my first mold with this kit. Make sure you download the instructions for use and follow them closely. In almost any case, you will need plasticine clay to properly set up your object for molding. Its basically a necessity to make sure you don't "lock" in your part by having the mold creep under the part or into any holes when you are apply pressure to the dough. You will also need a flat surface to put the part on. I used a board of wood covered in aluminum foil which worked incredibly well. Finally, you will want a scale to measure the epoxy gelcoat to hardener ratio, I don't think eyeballing that is a good idea since it is by weight.Also, don't add to much dough at first, it becomes difficult to measure how much you have put on, you want about half an inch. I wound up with a super thick base and too thin top of the mold.The wax and PVA worked just fine as release agents. The epoxy gel coat was relatively easy to mix and apply with the provided brush. Use acetone to clean the brush if you want to use it again. The dough was actually very pleasant to work with, very soft. Make sure you press it into any nooks.The gelcoat dried in about 2 hours, depends on your temperature, it can take from 2 to 3. The dough cured in about 7 hours.Overall, I'm happy it worked as an introduction to the craft. It is pretty expensive for what you get, so be frugal with the putty, but generous with the gelcoat and PVA. Watch out for physically locking your part in, be generous with the clay around the bottom of the part.
