Worth it!
"Trust no one" was a rather interesting take on your usual detective story, a quite original plot and I was immediately taken by the idea of a former crime writer struck with Alzheimer's disease trying , when things take a turn for the worse, to work out whether he's a criminal who's managed for years to escape getting caught or if the crimes themselves are only figments of his very vivid imagination. There are a lot of things that work really well in the novel. We slowly discover what his life is like and what his life used to be, reading about him and then perusing his madness journal. I think the strongest point in the novel is the wealth of details and accurate descriptions which enable you to really come close to all the characters in the story and feel a lot for them. You can't feel indifferent to the anguish Jerry is going through and you shiver at the ordeals both him and his wife have to deal with. There's great poignancy mingled with a good dose of humour as well. Even the more minor characters like the staff at the nursing home or the annoying neighbour Mrs Smith are well-rounded protagonists and the author has taken great care to make them live on the page. For me the only fault lies in the length of the novel. I did find that it was too slow at times and I believe that a slightly tighter plot would have rendered the story even more enjoyable. This being said I found this book a very accomplished tale whose solution is in the title provided you really don't trust anyone.

I really enjoyed this book - I love a twist and this one kept you going. It gave you little hints then immediately made you doubt your suspicions.

A very satisfactory psychological thriller
This excellent novel tells the story of a famous crime writer, Jerry Grey (pseudonym Henry Cutter), who struggles to differentiate between his own reality and the frightening plotlines he's created for his novels. With early onset Alzheimer’s, Jerry finds the lines blurred between the twelve crime novels he has written and real life. As dementia further takes hold, he confesses to his family and friends that the stories are real and that he actually committed the crimes. Is it all in his head or is he a serial criminal and murderer? This is a taut, well-written exploration of mental illness, dark imagination and the thin line between reality and illusion. It gives a heart-breaking insight into the utter confusion and disorientation that dementia imposes on it victims, but this is offset by an underlying darkly hilarious tone. I can’t remember really reading a book like this as it is unique. A very nice idea from the author is that Jerry keeps a diary of his more lucid moments and these diary entries are sprinkled throughout the book. The book lost a star mainly because it did meander a bit in the middle and the ending did not quite match the rest of the storyline for quality. I always like to feel that I know the main character and can empathise with him or her and this certainly was the case with this story. All in all, a very a good few nights’ entertainment and, if I do come across any of the author’s other novels, I would not be averse to picking them up and giving them a try.Digger 95Breakaway Reviewers received a copy of the book to review.

Surprise genre twist but none the worse for that.
X-Men, Brit style. This story takes an unexpected direction that works out rather well.I am not a fan of sci-fi or fantasy and hadn't expected to be wandering close to the borders of that genre in this novel, as the synopsis didn't indicate that, but luckily the author keeps a sufficiently tight lid on it that you don't need to be a conspiracy nut or wearer of tinfoil hats to enjoy the story.
