Make sure the jumper setting on reverse of hard drive is set to "MASTER". Hope this helps.

I'm expecting to use the external power adapter, but what kind of plug/adapter (110v or 220v) does it have?

When I received my device it came with a 100 to 240V Power adapter and also two different plug types where you can choose from fitting either a 3 pin UK style plug or a 2 round pin plug which you fit to the Power adapter.

Am i right in saying this doesn't work on an imac. i have three drives, but the imac doesn't recognise any of them!! this is certainly not plug n play

This does work on an iMac and pretty much any other device that has a USB port). If you are using an iMac, I would suggest that you format the SSD correctly depending on its use (i.e. whether it is for internal or external use). A quick google search should explain how to do this. If you have a blank SSD and you are trying to upgrade your internal storage from HDD, I would recommend cloning the SSD before install (do this using the Mac Disk Utility). If you are trying to do this and you still can’t see the drive, I suggest it you ask the seller for a replacement cable.

Do you need the external power adaptor when using a 2.5 ide or sata disk?

I have been using it with both some you need the power and some you don't but you have both options certainly the older 3.5 you do
