A good old fashioned ghost story but kindle please sort out the layout of this book!
This story is a classic. How much of it is true I don't know, but reading it on my own at night has always been very creepy. The kindle version of this book is absolutely appalling. The layout is completely wrong. Spelling mistakes, no space between chapters, words missing. It's very difficult to read and spoils the enjoyment of the story.

A really unnerving, unsettling book. I loved it.
I found this book really unsettling. I have seen most of the Amityville films so I knew what to expect, but it was the way in which the story unfolds in the book that I found slightly unnerving. The writer lays everything down so matter of factly that it almost triggers the readers imagination to make more of the situation than what actually happened. I found myself lying awake at night after reading a few chapters and feeling, dare i say it, but scared. On a few occasions I woke up around 2-3am and obviously your imagination kicks in.I dont know if I believe everything that Anson tells us, but never the less this is a truly unsettling book. A great read for lying alone at night on your own. The lost start is due to the validity of the overall story with the hindsight we now have. Reading this when it was first released must have been truly terrifying, especially if you thought it was all a bulletproof, true account of a haunting!

Chilling
What makes this book more frightening is that this actually happened, 28 days at 112 Ocean Avenue and the family fled and with good reason. The horrors witnessed by this family and spine tingling; the green slime, the figure robed in white, 'Jodie' the pig. Although the book has probably been dramatized slightly the truth is there and this makes addictive reading. You can't imagine how terrified the family must have been and how horrific it was for the priest desperate the help them as the evil struck him with illness and stigmata. Then there are the strange similarities, George Lutz beginning the look like the murderer who lived there before, his family sleeping in the positions the dead lay in. But although what evil lurked there hated them did it want them to leave or not? Every page has something more stunning to keep you reading. I recommend this book very highly to those interested in the horrors at Amityville or just want a spine tingling read. You won't regret it, amazing story.

Decent read
Shorter than I expected but still a decent read. The action starts pretty much right away, there's no long drawn out "getting to know you" phase. How much is true and how much is creative licence isn't for me to say but I enjoyed reading it all the same.

Motors along at a fine pace and with sufficient details to finely tread the line between fiction and commerically biased tabloid journalism. As expected however, this book is in no manner an objective study of events. It is a report of the story as it was told to Anson and is repeated with little bias. Some aspects are coloured to make a cohesive tale, but for the most part it conveys a sense of those involved presenting their account. As a journalistic approach to the novel, it works.

A Classic
First read this when I was about 10 or 11, having watched the original 1979 film version, and have recently revisited it as a replacement for my very battered copy. Whether or not you believe the story, as there are many people who have debunked it as being a hoax, it is still a classic haunted house story that, like a fine wine, gets better with age.
