This is the best record I've bought this year, I already have the album on CD and MP3 but it jsut sounds so much better on vinyl. Amazing delivery speed, got it next day at 8:10am, although I wouldn't recommend this album to any Omar fan that just likes the Mars Volta kind of stuff he does I would recommend this album highly to any die-hard Omar fan or anyone that's into heavy electronic experimentalism.5/5, sheer genius, thank you Amazon!

Every time I buy an Omar record I expect it to be weird and far out there. To me it comes with the territory. He and Cedric left At the Drive-in because they wanted to push the boundaries of music and become more progressive. Omar plays a key part in what makes the Mars Volta that weird, compelling, experimental rock band that challenges the listener in every way. So when unleashed on his own; you expect him to push the boundaries even further. Most of the Omar records I have had the pleasure of listening to, although showing that creative spark, are incredibly listenable and yet still hold the challenge that makes Mars Volta records so gripping. Well, that was until I heard this CD...The album was recorded back in 2001 after the demise of At the Drive- in and before the birth of The Mars Volta. If I was to pigeon hole this album I would put it in the EDL category, which stands for `Extremely Difficult Listening'. It is without doubt one of the worst CD's in my collection. To give you an idea of what it sounds like, think of the buzzing noises you get when trying to tune in a radio and the variation of sounds you get when you nearly pick up a channel. Now try listening to this sound pretty much continuously for 44 minutes. Well that is pretty much sums up this whole album. In the third track `Salvo' in around the 13 minute mark it is like they finally found a station when the word `Weapons' is heard followed by further murmurs before moving back to the irritating buzzing.This album really is a test of strength. Anyone who has listened to this album more than 10 times (I'm on my third listen) I would really like to hear what they hear in the album that I'm missing. How this record was split into tracks and the reason behind track selection I think only Omar knows. If you're not looking at your CD player you wouldn't know the first track `Sounder of Tame Swine' lasts 2 minutes and 43 seconds while the third track `Salvo' lasts 14 minutes and 18 seconds. Then there is the task of trying to work out what the track names mean and how they relate to the tracks. It just seems impossible.There are two tracks on the album which stand out head and shoulders above the rest; the fouth track `Impoverished Beliefs' and similarly titled ninth track `Improvised Beliefs'. These tracks showed signs of sanity within the record with a sign of tune until the noises come back and the awkward listening is apparent once again.Overall this album shows that there are no boundaries to Omar's creativity and imagination. I hold up my hands to him for trying to push the limits with this record. As much as I don't like it, I can appreciate that Omar does like to push the boundaries of his music further and takes more of a risk in doing so. In turn it means that people may not understand what or why he made this album and then released it to a wider audience when it was originally just for family or friends. But at the same time if there is one person out there who does think it is a good record, maybe it was worthwhile releasing it. For me though it is a step too far and should be avoided and I would strongly recommend saving your ears for his more recent stuff.

On les connaissait pour leurs œuvres au sein des progueux modernes de The Mars Volta, on les savait aussi friands de nombreux side-projects dont cet étrange et captivant éponyme n'est pas le moindre. Introducing Omar Rodriguez Lopez et Jeremy Michael Ward en leur cru électro de 2008. Un cru qui déplaira profondément à ceux qui apprécient les mers d'huiles et tire franchement vers un ambient industriel fourbi de nombreuses abstractions qu'on n'écoute pas tant qu'on le ressent. Minimaliste dans l'approche, absolument pas mélodique dans la réalisation, c'est une suite de pistes où on passe de bruitages synthétiques qu'on imaginerait bien rythmer un duo de sabre-laser d'un Star Wars définitivement plus à la marge à d'autres semblant exprimer le désespoir de l'abeille cherchant obstinément l'issue dans la surface vitrée avec, parfois, juste pour ne pas totalement perdre la victime auditive de l'expérience,une petite boucle mélodique bientôt triturée jusqu'à en devenir méconnaissable. Agréable ? Certes non, et ce n'en est d'ailleurs pas le but, mais pas désagréable pour autant, l'éponyme de compère qui ne pourront hélas pas continuer longtemps leurs expériences soniques (décès de Jeremy Michael Ward, d'une overdose, à 27 ans, un de plus) qui, quelque part entre Aphex Twin dans sa part ambiante et les bizarreries sonores d'un Matt Elliott (Third Eye Foundation), c'est avant tout d'un trip dont il s'agit plutôt, où l'on entre ou pas mais qui, assurément, ne laissera pas indifférent.1. アメリカのAmazonにてこの手のレビュアーさんのオススメにあったので購入。Whitehouseとかをも少し聞きやすくした感じに仕上がってて初めてこの手のノイズミュージックを聞く人には良いかもしれません。ガスター・デル・ソルとかも好きだったらOKだと思います。ジャケの感じでギターものかと思いそうですが、ガスターも似たユニットだし、アメリカではこういったノイズミュージックが割と多いので普通なのでしょうね、こういうジャケ。他のレビュアーさんの書かれているメルツバウとは比較になりませんよ。あれはもっと単調ですけど、こちらは音楽センスがかなり良い仕上がりですから。ノイズに縁のない素人の知人に聞かせたら「かっこいい」と素直に受け入れていましたから。昔と違って今の若い人って、こうした実験的な音楽も抵抗なく受け入れてしまえるのだなあと嬉しくなりました。一昔前なら”ただのノイズ”って言われておしまいでしょうけど、ここに詰め込められているノイズは、例えば、アメリカのインディーロックなんかに共通した知性とか音楽センスが共存しております。１、２曲はインパクトノイズなのでルーの”メタルマシーンミュージック”とかと同類に思われますが、３曲目あたりからグッと深くディープサウンドに移行していきますので全部通しで一度聞いてみてから判断してください。今日、久しぶりに(5年ぶり)に聞いたのですが、かなりカッコ良くて新鮮でした。なのでレビューする気になりました。とはいえ、延々ループして聞きまくりたいとは思いません。あと、なにか刺激を求められている方や、アイデアに煮詰まっているクリエイターの方にはオススメします。きっと異次元のものに出会えるでしょう。

03年に他界したTMVの元メンバー、Jeremy Michael Wardとのコラボ作品。レコーディング時期はATDIが終焉を迎えた01年からTMV結成の03年までの間らしい。当初200枚限定のMDでリリースされていたものが、理由は不明ながら再発された。残念ながら自分には一片たりとも理解不能。一連のオマー作と同じノリで買ったんだが、それとは似ても似つかぬ『実験的』な空間に消沈。全く掴めない抽象的な電子音/ノイズその他がピュルピュルキュキュキュオォーンと飛び交い続ける45分間に、展開やメロディらしきものが立ち現れる瞬間は皆無。作品中どっか1箇所ぐらいで『音楽』めいたところがあるよね？という思惑も完全にハズレ、本当に何も起こらないまま終わる。思うに、此処には音を『音楽』たらしめようとする意思が働いていないのかも。ノイズでさえもそこに何らかの意図があれば楽曲に聴こえてくるが、今作はただ2人の頭の中にあるイメージを放り出してインスピレーションを高めているような、いわば創作の前段行為を見ている感じ。演ってる2人には当たり前だがなんも罪はなく、要はよく調べずに飛びついた自分がマヌケだったという話。

聞き手を相当選ばせる作品となってます。終始雑音。Merzbow等が好きな方には心地良いんじゃないでしょうか。Omarの音楽性の幅広さには感心するばかりです。

ジェレミーとオマーの共作ですが、オマーのソロ作(もしくはDe Facto)のような期待をすると痛い目に合います。ただ、こんなのも方向性にあったのかということを思えば面白い音源ではないでしょうか。

オマーは天才だ。オマーの独創性は無限であり、次から次に溢れ出るアイデアは唯一無二であり底を知らない。大袈裟な話ではなく、ロックの歴史に大きく名を刻む、そんな存在だ。音楽は音楽。しかし時には、宗教以上の力を持つ事がある。もし、今の時代に、それを可能にできる人間がいるとしたら、それはオマーだと思う。かつて、ジミヘンやカートコバーンが巻き起こした様に。だが、それも行き続けると理解できなくなり、聞き手側をも突き放していく。音楽に理解できなくなってくる。だから無理に理解する必要はない。確かにオマーはすばらしい。しかしこれを聞いて、常人の感性では理解できない次元の音楽だと思った。無理にオマーの世界についていく必要はないんだと。僕はこのアルバムにどんな意味があるか知らない。そして何一つ感じ取れない。
