Stowaway is one of my Favorite Shirley Temple Movies
* When I ordered the Shirley Temple Little Darling Collection, I did not realize that Stowaway was included in the collection. The list of movies in the Editorial Review section looked like an exhaustive list, so I did not actually count the titles to be sure there were 18 listed. Since Stowaway was not listed in the review, I ordered it as a separate DVD. When the Little Darling Collection and Stowaway arrived together in the mail, I was disappointed to realize that Stowaway was already in the collection. The Editorial Review had listed only 14 titles, and omitted four: Stowaway, Susannah of the Mounties, Wee Willie Winkie, and Young People. So, be advised that the Editorial Review is not an exhaustive list -- and don't double-order as I did. * But, Stowaway is a wonderful story and still relevant today. There are still people, like Robert Young's character, who lead meaningless, self-centered lives, simply partying. When American Playboy Tommy Randall met the adorable orphaned child Ching-Ching, he was concerned about her well-being. He stopped indulging himself; straightened-up his life; and became a worthy adoptive parent. And, adopting a child, who is in need of loving parents and a home, is still a noble and rewarding event!

Shirley Temple Delights
Is this film a cinema classic ? Hardly.... Did the lead adult actors - Robert Young & Alice Faye, deliver performances that will be remembered for generations on par with the great thespians of their time? Definitely not! But as a light-hearted romp - sprinkled with a few musical numbers by Ms. Faye and Shirley Temple, it is a most charming story that delights - transcending age and gives the viewer a sense of happiness and the feeling that all will be right with the world just by spending a little over an hour with America's sweetheart. It is sort of like "Yes, Virginia - There is a Santa Claus", in as much as; where would we be without that childlike sense of wonder and delight that only the darling Shirley Temple gave millions of her fans from the 1930's, continuing to the present and will likely to live on for generations to come. All parents should make sure that their little ones have the opportunity to see the legacy she left for the world. Of course, it does not hurt that her little dog "Mr. Woo" is a scene stealer - although, sadly, his screen time is limited. I give it Five Stars because the movie makes me happy and leaves me smiling. What better reason is that?

Little orphan Ching-Ching
Shirley Temple provides the perfect foil for the romance involving a jaded millionaire's son and a regular American woman.Robert Young plays a young man who is too rich for his own good, accustomed to buying what he wants and doing as he pleases, always staying within the moral lines censors used to draw to keep Hollywood from going haywire. Alice Faye is the girl next door with a lovely contralto voice and an overbearing soon-to-be mother-in-law.When young Ching-Ching meets Uncle Tommy, he is impressed by her youthful innocence and aged wisdom (the result of living in a remote Chinese village for most of her life). She accidentally stows away on his luxury liner and bumps into Susan. After a few comical misunderstandings, a lovely song and moonlight kiss, Ching-Ching delivers an amusing rendition of imitations (including Al Jolson) and helps to further snarl things up for her two new friends. Her final act as a curly-topped cupid is to allow the divorce court judge to tell her what to say so that Tommy and Susan will have to admit that they want a happy ending as much as we do.Arthur Treacher delivers a typically delightful performance as the slightly bewildered but striving to please butler.P.S. Not a mental workout, but a fun way to spend an evening.

It was fun seeing those movies and reliving my childhood days with ...
I thought I was never ever going to complete my Shirley Temple collection. Everywhere I went to look for Stowaway, I was told it was not available. They were not able to locate it on their computers. You can imagine my excited surprise when I was able to find it on Amazon - and on my own - with no help from anyone. I "grew up" with Shirley Temple. I believe we were both born within the same time frame of year. I remembered only bits and pieces of her movies, so, when I found several of those movies I immediately purchased them. It was fun seeing those movies and reliving my childhood days with Shirley. I enjoyed every bit of Stowaway again as when I was a kid. Thank you.

One of Shirley's best but a nothing package.
It is not easy to classify the films of that phenomenon Shirley Temple. You either love 'em or hate 'em and there is not much in between. For what it is worth, this is one of the better ones and a smash in its day. Shirley plays an orphan in the orient, of all places, complete with Chinese sayings and dialect - all pretty hard to stomach but still impressive for a kid performer. The pluses for this film is that there is a quite exciting story to tell and there are some flesh and blood roles for the adults. Robert Young is a convincing playboy and Alice Faye, emerging at the time from her Harlow look alike days, performs 2 great songs, the signature "Goodnight my Love" which became a huge hit and the stunning "One Never Knows, does One" filmed at the entrance to a moonlit balcony with Faye in closeup. No wonder she became a superstar. Her warm contralto sounds superb and she looks sensational. The DVD print has been restored and is good but the soundtrack does not seem right with a sort of echoing resonance to it. There are no extras so I would not really say this DVD is great value.

Shirley Temple - Chinese Style
This is a typical vehicle for Shirley Temple who plays Ching-Ching whose missionary guardians are killed. She is taken to Shanghai by faithful Sun-Lu (Philip Ahn). She hides in the car of socialite Tony Randall (Robert Young) that is loaded onto a luxury liner. Shirley is the stowaway on her way to America. Also on board is Susan (Alice Faye) on her way to meet her fiance with her prospective mother-in-law (Helen Westley). Robert Young befriends and eventually marries Alice in order that Shirley should have proper parents, even if the arrangement is temporary. This is the likely eventuality when Shirley works her charm to try and save them from the divorce court. This is a delightful film with a stronger than usual script and cast. It was Alice's last film with Shirley. To make it authentic, producer Zanuck insisted on Chinese actors and that Shirley should be tutored in Chinese phrases. (Unfortunately it was Mandarin when most of the actors spoke a different dialect).Shirley dances and does impersonations of Edie Cantor, Ginger Rogers and Al Jolson (singing 'Mammy'). Other songs by Shirley included 'You gotta S-M-I-L-E If You want to be H-A-P-P-Y', 'I Wanna Go To The Zoo' and 'Goodnight My Love' later reprised by the gorgeous Alice Faye with adult lyrics. She also sings another Mack Gordon and Harry Revel song, 'Goodnight My Love', one of her biggest hits. Released on Christmas Day it was a box-office smash and one of the best productions of the year, (1936). Both Alice and Shirley were ill at various times during the filming much to the annoyance of Zanuck. 'That's What I Want For Christmas' seasonally tagged on and sung by Shirley adds little to the film.An enjoyable film. Colourised. The transfer could have been better on my copy. Aspect ratio 1.33:1. Still, it has Alice Faye in it!

Five stars for the film, one star for the production of this dvd
First off, this is a cracking little feel-good film, with a nice romance, some good songs, and some charming acting. The problem is not with the film but with this particular edition of it, which is what I'm rating it on.Be aware that this film has been COLOURISED. It does list this in the "product details" on this site, but one doesn't always read all of the "small print" (I don't, anyway!), and it is not mentioned *at all* on the actual box (in fact, the illustrations on the box are all from the original black and white print).Worst of all, about half way through the horribly coloured film, the soundtrack and picture cease to be in sync, making the whole thing completely unwatchable. This is a TERRIBLE copy of a great film. The film is definitely worth watching - just not this version of it!
