Best filter I've had.
The best filter I've had. I've spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars looking for the right filter for my turtle and my axolotl. This is it. Finally a great product that does what it's supposed to!

Depth of pickup tube even with the extension is a bit shallow for a tall tank (21 inches or 520 mm).
The noise level settles down to just the water cascade sound after a while if the filter is absolutely level. I have a wide edged tank (plastic framed Aqueon brand) so the body sits a half inch higher compared to a thin glass or plastic plain edged tank.If you get a flat panel 100% cover like on my tank (a combination of glass and plastic), you will have to trim out a portion to make room for this external tank's inlet and output. Might have trouble doing that with a metal hood. The vacuum action for a bed of gravel is very good. If you use the suction feature for water changing, that might take a while, since 2 gallons at a time takes 20 seconds to discharge and fill.

Needs tweaking but a good high flow filter
It is unfortunate that this makes such a loud rattle, because it filters wonderfully. If I get a response about how to quiet this, I will update my review.UPDATE: I have heard from Danner about how to quiet the rattling. I have not had time to do this yet. However the noise level has improved. HOB filters drive me crazy because you have to check on them every day to make sure water is flowing. Several things can stop the flow. All things considered, I have ordered another one of these for my biggest tank, that has a HOB that constantly stops flowing. The exchange rate of water on this Danner is incredible. So I am upping the stars. Once I use the water change part, if that works as easily as touted and if it is quieter I will again edit my review.2nd Update: Okay so you have to fiddle with the parts to get this to be at an acceptable noise level. If you could get the replacement filters here at Amazon with Prime, I would give it another star. I am not paying $10. to ship 2 small filter replacements. I can concoct my own.

Not quiet not great at keeping tank clean
We were very disappointed in this product. Took forever to get to us and we thought we had upgraded but even though more expensive than last filter we had does not work as well at keeping tank clean and it much noisier

Good marketing, not so good product if you have to clean it.
After seeing the “how to” videos, this looked like the filter to buy. I was great for water changes with its direct tank-to-bucket system. The built in substrate vacuum system was not so great. The attachment did work well picking up the debris, but only the large particles remained in the “catch net”. The fine silt was returned directly to the tank. Due to the intense water flow of the filter, the supplied media for the reservoir clogged up quickly and had to be cleaned. I purchased a pre-filter and that solved that issue. A few days ago, I noticed that the once quiet filter was now making a buzzing noise (water still flowing). I felt the impeller motor and it was quite hot. I took the filter of the tank (I forgot to mention that it is a 20 gallon long) and took it apart for cleaning. I didn’t find it overly dirty (mostly the usual algae presence). After cleaning everything of debris and rinsing all of the parts (well water, no chlorine), I reassembled the filter and placed it back on the tank. After filling the reservoir (to prime the pump), I reached around back to grasp the power cord .... it was soaked with water running from the impeller motor (the O-ring didn’t seal properly). After quickly removing the entire filter, I noticed there was quite a lot of water on the floor behind the oak tank stand, up under the baseboard of the wall and, of course, on the floor in front of the tank stand where the reservoir overflowed while trying to get everything (filter and attached pre-filter and pipe) into the bucket. The Danner filter now sits in an Amazon box in the basement. The filter was purchased on May 30 of this year. It looks like I’m done with hang-on-the-back filters.

Great value. Use a lubricant on the intake plug oring.
I have used Supreme Filters for over 35 years. They are well built and designed. This is a great buy. Worth way more than what you pay. The filter assembly is tight so you may need extra time getting it together. The only negative thing is it has a removable plug on top of the intake tube which allows air to asperate into the pump causing noise. This can be rectified with some silicone grease (not caulk) or petroleum jelly. Once done it is super quiet.Update: The best way to eliminate impeller noise is to remove the impeller from its shaft and force silicone grease (not caulk) into both ends of the impeller shaft hole. Slide shaft into the impeller and remove excess grease.Nice gravel cleaner, but works better siphoning it into a pale. For some people with a limited water supply, the gravel cleaner may be a plus. Also drawing water out of a pale takes to long. The upside is it does not disturb anything.
