Robert Duvall is always worth watching
I always find Robert Duvall an impressive actor and, as always, he shone. It's a gentle, thoughtful movie, pleasant to watch with good characters. It's not an "in your face" religious film as might be thought by some of the reviews here. I actually found the way religion was simply part and parcel of some of the characters' lives very interesting and impressive. As a non-golfer I found the golf aspect interesting too.

More than entertainment
This film has been made for than simply entertaining - it encourages you to review your life's values, purpose, truths and lies, that you may accepted over a life-time. I certainly caught myself reflecting on what was said in the film, and this helped me evaluate my trajectory in life. In this, the film achieved it's objectives, and I am all the more grateful to the One it points to for my integrity.

An easy film to watch. The film contains a religious message, but this does not dominate the story.
This is, essentially, a religious film. It presents its message through the story of a young, ambitious, but unsuccessful, golfer who meets, and is taken under the wing of, a retired professional golfer (Duvall). Duvall offers the younger man some timely lessons which motivates him to rethink his game, as well as his life.Among these lessons is to remain calm, balanced, focussed and not to be manipulated by what other people say. I am not religious, yet irrespective of their being presented in a religious, as well as a competitive golfing, context, I do find that these qualities are generally desirable for maintaining good mental health. (I practice them myself to the best of my ability.)In one of his lessons, Duvall delivers his message through art. It appears that Duvall’s character is a competent painter, for he produces a nice little landscape painting as an example for his pupil (Lucas Black) to follow. Luke (Lucas Black) then produces a painting which is almost as competent as Duvall’s. This is not believable in the least. It is also misleading. To become a competent artist takes practice. Since Luke had spent most of his free hours in childhood and as a young man practicing golf, then where on earth did he find the time to learn to paint to that standard? (I say this because at one time I would have been taken in by this nonsense and been discouraged by Luke’s apparently effortless competence from trying my own hand at art.) In addition, it also turns out that Luke is a competent horseman and angler, without, I suspect, having had much experience of either. The Utopians – all 300 or so of them – do seem to think they live in a utopia. There are times when they seem a bit smug about their cosy lifestyle. Even so, Luke does experience some aggression from another young man and, indeed, I think that he and his mates played a rather nasty and dangerous prank on Luke (cowboy poker, was it called?). So, perhaps Utopia is not as utopian as its inhabitants believe. In fact, I think it is a bit too cosy, so much so that a young woman, Sarah, is so happy there that she never wants to leave. Never wants to get out there and experience the rest of the world? To me that makes Utopia seem like a prison! To conclude, although this film offers viewers a religious message, for me, the religious element does not dominate the story and so I found the film to be very watchable. In addition, I do like actors Robert Duvall and Kathy Baker, although we didn’t see enough of the latter actor. The film also has a cosiness that I like (even if that cosiness is false.) For these reasons, I’ll give the film 4 stars.

Quick delivery from seller, been looking for this movie for a while, I saw it on the plane on the way to the USA, but the movie never seemed to be released here, could buy US version but would not play on my machine, so saw this thought I would try it, plays no bother at all, a nice movie and helps if you like golf too.

Nice movie
Although I can see what some reviewers meant about the religious aspects of the film. I found it to be a perfectly acceptable film which affirmed some of my personal beliefs. The cast was a good ensemble cast and gave good performances. it is not a film that will suit everyone's tastes though.
