Scott Tennant's Basic Classical Guitar Method, Book 1 (Book & CD)

Superficial coverage with insufficient practice exercises
For learning classical guitar, I'd very much recommend you not use this book except as a supplement. There are many better books such as the ones by Noad that will allow you to progress without discouraging you. The key problem is that this is an extremely short book, 47 pages (by contrast, Noad's Solo Guitar Playing, Book 1 has 254 pages), and much of the space is taken up by photos and illustrations. As a result, the lessons give you way too much to learn with too little explanation and too few practice examples to learn the ideas presented. For example, chapter 5 has you learn the notes on the 4th, 5th, and 6th strings on the guitar (consider that each string has 3 notes to learn for a total of 9), and gives you a few brief exercises in a total of 5 pages to learn them! Chapter 6 has you learn the fingering for the "accidentals" (sharps and flats),which involves 12 different positions in 8 1/2 pages. Suffice it to say, you won't even come close to mastering these keys. The minimal text tells you very little beyond the most basic things about playing. This was to be the first volume of a 5-volume series on playing classical guitar. Indeed the supposed succeeding volumes are pictured on the back page, though actually only three have been published---the last one 5 years ago and hard to obtain. I'm not surprised. Volumes 2 (which devotes an inordinate amount of space to trimming your fingernails) and 3 are about the same length as volume 1. There is simply not enough meat on the bone in this series, and it is best forgotten, as possibly the publisher has already decided.

Fantastic for the classical beginner
I'm 60years old and have just started to "self teach" myself classical guitar ( I like to challenge myself) this book and DVD are perfect for me, they show every thing I need to know, from the correct way to sit and hold the guitar, correct hand positions and the basics I needed to get started. There is even a test/review section at the end of the chapters. I really like the photos of the finger positon and how that is written as a musical note on sheet music, the beginning of being able to sight read music, something I have wanted to do for ages, so well done Scott and all involved, the rest is up to me !!!

A great teaching tool!
I just received my DVD/book combo today and I am thrilled with Scott Tennant's instructional DVD and book. As an absolute classical guitar beginner, Mr. Tennant's DVD/book shows me that I can play the classical guitar and that I can do it myself with his help! I believe this DVD/book combo is a MUST for anyone who is thinking about or ready to play the classical guitar. I know that I will purchase the subsequent DVDs/books as my learning progresses. This is a great product.

Scott Tennant is Great!
My instructor uses these. I never used them because I had past piano experience and therefore kind of skipped the basics, but I have started using them with my students and have yet to find anything I don't like about Tennant's methods. There are some gaps where a handful of things are not necessarily explained in the text. This is not a "teach yourself" book. It is supplementary for a guitarist taking a lesson (preferably with a classical teacher).

Really enjoy this. The songs are very simple to start
Really enjoy this. The songs are very simple to start. I'm brand new to music overall, so don't know how to read the sheet. These songs are simple enough that I can figure and learn along the way, while also providing the tab (to check my work or use when I'm lazy ;) . Great beginner book

Educator/music teacher perspective
The Scott Tennant BCGM is not a new take on guitar but well put together. Audio and video examples are very helpful especially for those looking to study without the guidance of a guitar teacher. Nothing replaces a live teacher but Scott does a good job of providing a solid foundation for beginning students to build on.

Excellent
Recommend this to students. Combined with book two and three, an excellent basic starter. Put them together with Pumping Nylon and Beginner to Intermediate Repertoire, you have a great series of study for your first and second year students.

Skimpy
A bit thin for the price. You'd have to buy several more volumes if you wanted to progress even a little bit. But good detailed info.
