Expensive? Yes. Worth it? Surprisingly . . . absolutely.
Have you ever been in your wood shop and looked up at the industrial top-wattage biggest-light-bulbs-you-could-buy-at-Lowe's light coming out of your ceiling and said to yourself, "Self, the light in here is really great . . . but it is missing something."? Or have you just felt like having the noon-day sun suspended over your lathe would make you just a *bit* better at what you do?You don't need to look any longer. Honestly, when I saw the wattage on the package my hopes weren't that high. It looked as if it would be about the same as the lights I already had in my garage, but I thought perhaps the reflector would diffuse the light some. So with some trepidation about the money I had just spent on what really is just a light bulb, I screwed it into the socket. I expected it to be a bit brighter and a bit more spread out, since the bulb I took out was the brightest large bulb sold at my local Lowe's.I was wrong. When I flicked the switch, it looked like someone had blown a hole through my roof to let in the mid-day sun. My lathe glowed bright red before the wood on it burst into flame and the metal started pooling and running down the sides. The concrete underneath it started turning red, then black. I frantically groped around the wall and shut off the switch before my garage was reduced to cinders around me, and marveled at the brief moment of wonder I experienced before I lost my sight for life.O.k., that may have been a bit of an exaggeration. But in all honesty this light was a LOT brighter than I could have ever expected, and made the bulb I replaced look like I had been using a candle. Is this the cost of 10 spotlight bulbs? Yes. Is it worth it? It is for me. Now it makes me look at other parts of my shop (which I used to think were well-lit) and look back at my lathe area as an oasis of light. The ONLY thing that would make this light better would be if it were $10 . . . so I could buy 10 of them and make my shop light up at night like there was a nuclear reaction going on inside. As it is I plan to save up and buy at least three more of these.Update now that I have owned this for 9 months (no, unfortunately it hasn't spawned a litter of more of these). I not only still love it and still feel the same way . . . but I found an interesting side effect. With my auto-darkening welding helmet . . . it actually goes dark when I look at the light. This doesn't happen with the spotlight bulb I have in the socket near it. The helmet honestly thinks I'm looking at a weld in progress, THAT is how bright this light is.Update now that I have owned this for 4 years:Everything I said above still holds true. The longevity on it is good, I use it nearly every day. In 4 years I figured there would be a bunch like it but brighter . . . but if I were to buy a new bulb like this today I would *still* buy this one. I haven't seen anything else on the market in the same price range that compares (and I have about 10 different types of LED lights in my garage and several more types in my house).

easy and instant light fixture
This is advertised as a workshop or garage light, but this is totally a wonderful fixture for many locations, sort of industrial chic, and so very bright. Perfect to light my stairs, which have no other light on them. Super easy to install -- just screw it in, and you have a new light bulb and a new light fixture in one. The LED light should last for years, which is great because the fixture is about 12 feet off the landing, and I am aging past any desire to climb ladders to replace such a high light bulb. When my antique kitchen fluorescent finally dies, I very well may replace it with one of these. You could paint the shade for even more style possibilities. Love it.

My go-to shop lighting solution!
Super bright lights and excellent price point. I've been using these in my cabinet shop for years. I was looking into metal halide and high pressure sodium but the price for the fixtures and bulbs were very prohibitive as wellas the high power demands. These lights, with the built in shades, are too bright to even look into. I use 6 of these in a 1400 square foot shop and it's the best lighting that I've ever had. The led's are very energy efficient and screw into a standard light socket. These are the perfect solution for economy and bright lighting.

Incredibly bright, just like daylight
This is a wonderful simulation of brilliant daylight. I put this bulb on top of the Normandale 150-watt Incandescent Concord Torchiere Lamp, which is the only torch lamp I could find that has a standard socket rather than built-in bulbs. By the way that is a gorgeous lamp for a mere $35, and this bulb works perfectly in it. I am using it to illuminate the white ceiling of my wife's sewing room. When you turn this thing on, it is like brilliant daylight throughout the room, and since the light bounces entirely off the ceiling there are no shadows cast on anything except the floor, so even if you are looking down onto a desk or table from above, the light comes from all over the ceiling and your target remains lit. The bulb and lamp together are an amazing solution to her lighting problems. Sometimes I just go in there and turn the light on because I can't believe how good it is.

Daylight in the shop!
I have a typical farm shop, high ceilings, large work area, and regular lighting fixtures and fluorescent tube hoods. All that was really good for was being able to get around, bur drop and work lights were needed to see much. And, as everyone with florescent hoods know, one of those tubes always turns pink or yellow in just days to weeks of use, so the step ladder is handy along with a supply of new tubes.Found these LED bulbs, bought two and installed them. WOW! Do not need work lights where these are installed, just like daylight. No more cords to trip over, no more dropped work lights, no fighting with florescent tubes, just daylight and regular Edison socket screw in light bulbs like regular bulbs.Ordered more once I saw how well they work, and cost a fraction of the fixtures I was considering.Crummy fluorescent fixtures are going to ReStore, along with boxes of spare tubes..

Great Way to Increase Light Without Changing the Light Fixture
We needed more light in our garage. I found this light and was delighted that we didn't have to change out the whole light fixture. All we had to do was unscrew the existing light bulb and screw this whole unit into the light socket! Very easy. And we wanted it to be LED. We have changed all of our light bulbs to LED to save on energy costs. This unit installed very easily. It puts out a great amount of light. A huge improvement over the single light bulb that we had there before. Very happy with this purchase. My only complaint is that it was shipped to us with no packaging whatsoever. They just ran some packing tape around the box the product comes in and shipped it. I was concerned that the product might be damaged with such poor packing, but the product came though just fine.

bright light!
Ordered this for my garage. It is bright! Time will tell if it lasts as advertised. Until then, I am quite happy and plan to order another as I have two sockets. I would recommend them. In fact, I now, since my first review, have ordered another.

Excellent, Bright Light That Fits Most Standard Sockets, Too Expensive
I had bought this light from other places and paid a lot less for it. I found that the light gives a very bright light and is excellent in my shed, in my windowless water treatment room at my house, and in the basement. I highly recommend this light if you have a dark area you want to illuminate. Easy to install, just screw it in to the light socket, however some light sockets are too deep to fit this light as the threaded part of this light is short and then the large housing hits the edge of the light socket before the light is screwed in all the way. I bought some light socket extensions on amazon.ca that came from China and appear to be safe to use.
