EVERY LAY EXECUTOR SHOULD READ THIS - It is seriously well written
Written by a Chartered Account and not a Lawyer. Written very well and clearly I might add. Anybody in Britland who is faced with being an executor of a dear departed really will find this book helpful. It is CLEAR, EASY TO READ, AND A COMPREHENSIVE STARTER FOR 10 of an extremely complex subjest.I am an FCA but with no connection at all to the writer BUT have recently been involved as an executor to now passed senior family members. I learned much of this stuff when doing my Articles (training contract for you younger turks) and have not been involved in this area for some 40 years. This book has been an insightful refresher for me and, with the 'simplicity and thoroughness' in which it has been written will certainly help anybody who finds them in a similar position as I have when 'battling' with solicitors charging c.Β£300/hr for their time (outside London !). I would still use a solicitor to help with the Probate application and HMRC filing (it is so easy to make a mistake and HMRC are not exactly renowned for their forgiving nature) BUT it is SO GOOD to having an understanding of your responsibilities and there is so much you will be able to do yourself. This book is well written in straight forward English and will help any resourceful person understand what they have got themselves into by accepting a role of 'Executor' AND to ask 'the right questions' of their solicitor.

Useful guide
Bought this book as it appeared to be the most recent guide to probate. Many changes to the process because of the pandemic but it was still useful. Between you and me I prefer the Which? version but that was an earlier revision.

Great overview
I read this before I started on my mumβs probate - it was a quick read and explained everything clearly for a completely inexperienced person. I looked up some of the points on the government website (which is also very clear and helpful - and their helpline was excellent too). I then followed the book as I worked through probate.

Really helpful if you are appointed as an executor
I have been appointed as an executor in a friend's will and I need to get a feel for the responsibilities that this will entail. Starting from having a general understanding, this book has been really helpful in describing the process and providing information on the time frame, priorities, and sources of help. I now feel much better prepared and will re-read the book when the time comes for me to step up to the plate. It has also enabled me to start asking some questions such as where his will is stored and who the other executors are. A really helpful book which I can recommend for any lay person who may need to act as an executor.
