Classic movie, classic music...
Classic - will never tire of this movie, when American teens were picking up their messages from answer machines in their rooms, and we in blighty still had one phone in the Hall! Proms were something we’d only heard of and Andrew McCarthy was seriously dreamy. The music elevates this to an all time 80s classic. Love it. John Hugh’s at his best.

Romeo and Juliet in the 80s...
I'm not quite sure what happened here. The performances are all nice and natural. The film is just a bit bland until it gets going, it's not quite as funny as Sixteen Candles and we don't get as deep into the characters as the Breakfast Club. The camera often seems positioned quite far from the actors. I feel this is what can happen when a writer sort of goes into autopilot, storywise nothing really happens for the first hour. Dickie is in nearly every scene just being manic and hyper, like early Woody Allen films. Also my goodness what is he wearing? In fact nearly all the fashion is terrible, each character is dressed in the most awful clothing. Andy does not look good in pink, sunglasses and hats, it all just blends in together and looks really cheap and nasty. The antagonist also wears they awful white suits, like Saturday Night Fever or Something. Only Blane looks okay. What the film does have going for it is some interesting class commentary, whether its pride and Prejudice or Parasite I always feel that films which deal with this issue get me interested because it's such a relevant issue, whatever age your story is set in. The film does improve as the film goes on, the two main male characters are basically good guys when we meet them which makes a nice change. Blane is sweet and caring like Duckie, more relaxed and less manic but unlike Duckie he doesn't have much of a backbone. The longer the film goes on the more you get a kind of Romeo and Juliet vibe. You feel bad for the characters but the scenes do feel a bit soap opera like at times, especially those with the father. The music also improves as the film goes on. It's got a very good soundtrack. The costumes and wardrobe section is very arresting, it's something you'll have to make your own mind up on though.

Brilliant!
John Hughes helped to tell the story of the outsiders, the struggles, the under appreciated teens of the 80’s and this is no different. The characters as you’d expect are ones you care about deeper and deeper the more you are absorbed into the film. It’s definitely one that you must see if you’ve ever felt alone, confused about life, different or didn’t fit in.

Best viewed through nostalgia's rose-tinted spectacles...
I decided to watch this as it is has such good reviews and is hailed as an 80s classic, but it seems that it is best viewed through nostalgia's rose-tinted spectacles. Duckie and Iona were done well, but the rest of the acting was distinctly mediocre and there was zero chemistry between Andy and the spineless Blane, so their mutual attraction was hard to believe. At least it was included with Prime so I didn't part with any more money.

Excellent casting.
A film very much of its time yet seems to be of every time. All the cast are excellent...... bringing the story of youth with its yearning for acceptance whilst sstruggling for individuality to life. It also cleverly mirrors the cruelty and joys of that age with precision.Definately worth viewing.

Memory Lane
Bought this film to play for my children, I loved this when I was their age! It hasn't dated too well, some of the scenes are a bit cringy, but it was great to watch it again.

Pretty In Pink
This John Hughes classic is a stable of 80s High School romance. Molly Ringwald plays the archetypal High School geek with a depressed underemployed father; two guys compete for her attention - one her male best friend and the other, the local rich boy. It's probably mostly worth a watch for Ringwald's awful pink prom dress more than anything else ...

Not pretty in any colour
Good movie from the canon of John Hughes, loved by some and disliked by many. Although John Hughes has presented us with some of the eighties most classic movies, Pretty in Pink has aged worse than many of his other movies and I cannot pin point why. The only positive factor that rescues the movie from the clutches of the wet and untalented Andrew McCarhty is James Spader's great acting as always.
