A nice machine for basic sewing tasks
I’m a 65 year old male and learned how to sew from my mother as a young teenager, using her mother’s old Singer from the 1930s. That machine died a few years ago, and I recently started researching new machines. I settled on the Singer Classic HD500 because it is heavy duty, is not computerized and is simple to use, and the styling is reminiscent of those old machines.I used it today to raise the hem of some new Levi’s 501 jeans, and the machine had no problem with the heavy denim. The end of the machine slips off (it has a small storage compartment) so that the legs of pants can slip over the sewing platform for rotation around while stitching). It has a dozen different stitches (most of which I will probably never use), and comes with some accessories. I also opted for the black Singer case to store the machine in when not in use. The hems turned out great and look like factory made (except for the color fading from washing) and I couldn’t be more pleased with this purchase.I will mostly use it for hem alterations and reinforcing pockets, etc. and look forward to many years of use. My wife laughed at me when I joked that it was a very “manly” sewing machine.

Easy to Set Up and Quiet! I Love This Sewing Machine!
I am glad I decided to buy the Singer Classic HD500. Love it's retro look!More importantly, it is really easy to thread, and winding the bobbin was a breeze. I have not had problems with thread breaking like some have mentioned.. And the foot pedal works well and has a wide range from barely moving to high speed and it handles the fabric well at both speeds. This machine is much quieter than any others I have, too. While the outside body is plastic, the inside is metal and it is heavy so it stays put when sewing.Folks have mentioned the inconvenience of not having a full manual shipped with the machine. Some have mentioned they had to pay for it, but it is readily available on Singer's website at no cost.. Since I can't include the link in my review, maybe Amazon should have one in the listing?Singer has created the imprint of a ruler at the bottom front of the machine, which would be helpful if you could actually read it. It could be much improved if it were enhanced with gold metallic paint to match the rest of the machine. That is what I did and it is much more usable. I've included photos of before and after to see how it turned out for me.

GREAT MACHINE
I read mixed reviews and youtube videos about this machine , some negatives , some positives. But i still decided to buy it and try it out. I love it completely. Reading the reviews of various problems, i came to the conclusions, that it may be the users not using it correctly. You know a simple error will give you bad results. Tension, wrong needle, damaged needle, wrong threading and so on.... everytime i had a problem while testing it, i realized the problem was mine... there are many components to give a great stitch. A bit expensive, not sure why it's more expensive that the regular Singer Heavy duty. No manual of instructions which is really cheap from Singer, but everyting is getting like that pretty much... less for more. So i bought the one on ebay . I downloaded the PDF but i don't want to refer to that everytime i need to check something. My only complainis that i wish the stitches were clearer to read, between overlock, zig zag and blind hem, i have to almost try them all to find the one am looking for. Will make up a system of my own for that. And also, simply beautiful black classy sewing machine.

needle position is locked in the left position, i can not get it to go to the center, disappointed
This machine is very fancy, does many functions, sews threw most heavy fabrics,One down fall I bought 2 singers and both of them the needle position is locked in the left position , i can not get it to go to the center, I will have to take it to a shop which will cost 100.00 just for them to look at it, very disappointed in this feature as I can't use it for button holes..

Intermediate quilter
Love love love this machine. I have another Singer, heavy duty one. This one is so smooth and the needle threader actually works, bonus. It truly is a work horse. I have been able the finish 2 queen size quilts in no time. No clogging, no breaking thread, just sit and sew. A fabulous machine. I know which Singer I'll be buying from now on. No extra features to break down. Just a outstanding, simple machine.

JUNK! DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE!
UPDATE: 06/18/26: The warranty for this machine is USELESS! The timing for the one-step button hole function did not work right from the time I received the machine so was not even factory tested. I contacted Singer about the warranty and found the warranty mostly protects Singer, not the buyer. I was told my machine was still "under warranty" and that I could ship it to Singer who would then ship it elsewhere for repair, so God knows when I would ever see my machine again. Plus I would have to pack it myself and haul it to UPS or USPS, or FedX. This is extremely inefficient. I was told I could take my Singer to the nearest Authorized Singer Repair myself. I asked where that was and was told KANSAS!! I am in Ocala, Florida! So basically, forget any warranty on this machine and don't count on it working. It is a beautiful piece of JUNK! DON'T BUY THIS MACHINE! Get a Brother instead!UPDATE: 04-23-26: The One-Step Buttonhole Presser Foot is useless to me because the timing of the machine is off. This is a brand new machine so the timing should not be off. I decided to do a manual 4-step buttonhole and started looking for a "regular" presser foot so I could just do the buttonholes manually. I looked and looked. No such thing. I contacted Singer. Singer said there is no other buttonhole presser foot for this machine. Singer really did not care that the timing was off in my machine; did not even offer to fix it. Singer suggested a universal buttonhole presser foot that costs $149.21 but said they cannot guarantee it will even work. Very sad. Singer used to be a top brand sewing machine. The one I had in the 60s certainly was. This one came with flaws. I also had a friend who bought this same machine and it was defective. The bobbin winding refused to function. He returned it and bought a Brother and is very pleased with it. I should probably do the same.

Very easy to use. Wish a manual would have come with it. I did print it off.

Wanted to like it....but it went back and got a Brother instead....
A friend of mine bought a different Singer model, and had such a hard time with the bobbin, she returned it and got this model. She completely loves it, so when I was ready to buy a sewing machine, I knew this was going to be the one. I loved the classic look, the ease (no buttons and computer codes, just turn dial), and...it's a Singer! That is what I thought, silly me.....The HD500 arrived the next day. Beautiful. Slick. Classic. Solid built......and USELESS. At least the one I received. I spent hours trying to thread the thing. The bobbin was such a convoluted, almost odd, threading system, it was almost impossible to see the grooves they were talking about. Oh yes, the manual (you don't get any, you have to download it) sucks.... I even took photos of the bobbin slot to enlarge it with my phone so I could see what they were referring to! The bobbin and upper thread tangled horribly. Another threading attempt, more tangles. I called my friend, she helped me. Still more tangles. We tweaked everything. More tangles. My partner got home, he helped me. More tangles. After several hours of this (and three people), I had to accept the fact that I maybe got a dud. Immediately my mind went back to the days when I was 13 years old and would use my mother's Singer to make muppets! At 13 I could use a sewing machine, but at 58 I can't???? Either I have gone senile or these machines have gotten way too complicated. It broke my heart, but I returned it. I thought I'd get a quick replacement that might actually work, but Amazon's system with these machines is a bit screwed up. I have been an Amazon customer and Prime member for 20 years, and yet I'd have to ship this back with NO replacement, AND my refund will (allegedly) come in 2-4 weeks (what is this, the 80s?) After some back and forth, I figured I'd shell another $400 and get a new one rather than wait 2-4 weeks for the refund. But, the more I read reviews about this and other Singer machines, the more my heart sunk. What happened to Singer???!!!I had enough. I canceled my replacement Singer machine order (that I had to pay for, mind you) and, while I was in the process of doing this, a Brother sewing machine popped up in my Amazon home page. Brother? I mean, the best printer I have ever owned (and still do) is a Brother. A hand labeler I love and use a lot is a Brother. But...they make sewing machines, too? I started doing some relentless research. It turns out, Brother sewing machines are highly rated, and the model that had popped up was a top rated model. Everything about it had a green check mark. I perused the model's reviews elsewhere, also highly rated. That was it. I bought it. When the Brother machine arrived, it was good. And imagine...it came WITH A MANUAL. The bobbin threading was ridiculously efficient, so much so I wanted to spend an hour threading and rethreading this bobbin just for fun! And best of all, THE MACHINE WORKS. I hate to say it but...bye-bye Singer, and hello Brother. So, why two stars instead of one for this review? The design. This Singer model is beautiful. If that were enough, I'd have kept it. But I rather less beauty and more functionality. What can I say, I'm practical and want my sewing machine to get on with sewing.

As good as the hand-cranked ones
This is a fantastic sewing machine. However, if you are buying from the UK, make sure they send you the UK three (3) pin plug, otherwise you will have to purchase a converter kit. BTW, it does not matter if you have bought it through Amazon UK, you still must check the plug! Good luck!

This sewing machine runs like a charm!
I love this machine. It’s easy to use and runs quiet and smoothly. I use it daily to make lovely items. I made some cabinet covers for the bottom of my cabinet similar to shelf liners. They’re great and I can easily wipe them due to the fabric.

Quality and performance excellent.
An excellent sewing machine. Looks really great and right out of the box it has preformed all my tasks perfectly.I do a lot of denim and multilayer projects and have not had any issues at all.The only down side was I had to find a site where I could print off a free manual that was not included in the box and it did not come with a hard cover and was not able to order one separately, but very happy with the product.
User
Use this all the time.
I love this machine! The only problem is the thing that holds the thread at the top broke up and Singer told me it isn’t covered
User
Great machine!
I am very pleased with this machine! I love the drop in bobbin, and the smooth sewing. The heavy duty advertising is spot on; I can sew through multiple layers of fabric, and the stitching tension remains even. I have sewn around the edges of 21 charity quilts in the last week, and have had no issues. I lost my old Singer in a fire, but I am very happy with this new one!
