Product Description This guide reviews and analyses the systems and techniques currently available to insulate externally the walls of most types of buildings. The book also includes detailed drawings, check-lists, reports and general industry information. Since the major energy saving interest in the United Kingdom is concerned with up-grading dwellings and public sector buildings, such as schools and hospitals, those are the areas on which attention will be focussed. However, recently domestic housing has increasingly been examined as to the production of Thermal Performance Certificates, together with the aspect of sustainabilty of building material supplies. Also included are detailed drawings for all common situations where detailed consideration must be given to the project to ensure a professional installation. About the Author C J Pearson as book

Detailed, useful information that's difficult to find elsewhere
It's difficult to find detailed information on external wall insulation (EWI), so this book fills a real gap. The book contains a lot of information on materials, details and applying EWI to existing walls. The book seems aimed primarily at retrofit installlations, which is very useful because it's always more difficult to find good information about retrofit than new build. The book contains a lot of information about design details around windows, soffits, damp-proof course, etc. There is also lots of practical information dealing with issues such as covers for window cills. It's difficult to find this sort of detailed information elsewhere. This is by far the best book on the topic, not least because it appears to be the only book on the topic. The book is not quite perfect in two ways. First, the book is written in a rather stilted style, with much of the text written in the passive voice. This could easily be fixed by a good editor. Secondly, many of the design details in the book contain thermal bridges, and there appears to be an assumption that the goal is a relatively low thickness of insulation. Anyone reading a book about EWI is probably more focused on eliminating thermal bridges than the average person. So it would be useful for the book to deal with issues such as installing windows within the insulation, and covering the frames with the EWI.
