Will this work to connect my iPhone to my old hp printer?

If your printer has a USB port, I think it will.

I want to use this to attach an external dvd player to my tv, however it's got a male usb to hdmi cord. would this allow video to play?

If you use a female-to-male extender on the USB end of your existing cable, this cable will serve as just an extension cord, it will not change any existing functionality.

I'm no "tech wiz" but, I would suspect that as long as the connectors fit the devices, there should be no problem with data transmission! Check if the various ports have specific labels, ie. DVD player, TV, etc.!
