Doctor Who - The Sensorites [DVD]

Sensitive Sensorites Manipulated by Rogue Traitor
Classic story where the first doctor and his companions land inside a spaceship and find what they think at first people who are dead but turns out they are just frozen in time by alien creatures called The Sensorites who can not only speak english but are able to use telepathy when talking to each other.Ian, Susan and the doctor with 2 of the crewmembers from the spaceship accompany the Sensorites down to their planet to help them understand why so many get sick and die whilst Barbara is left aboard with one more crewmember and a Sensorite in good faith! The Doctor as usual investigates who or what is trying to prevent them from finding a cure specially when Ian suddenly becomes ill and a rogue sensorite seems to think that it is a rouse that he is not sick and just pretending, this sensorite pretends to be the second elder to get his way and the true elder tells him he is a traitor. This is nice little romp, and we get to see the first doctor wearing a cloak that became so familiar with Jon Pertwees doctor, we even see him doing a little mixing of test tubes in a lab like the 3rd Doctor in his incarnation does rather more of. Must have for any collection of classic who and would prefer watching this over New Who which went off the boil for me anyway when RTD, David Tennant and crew left and Steven Moffat took over.

Intelligent Romp that explores Doctor Who's past for the first time
Love how convincing William Hartnell is as the angry Grandfather who realises Susan is starting to fight with him. The Sensorites are related to the OOD and use mind control. However The Doctor soon discovers they are afraid of the dark.

Lovely Episodes
Great sets, great monsters, great acting - this is one of my favourites of the Hartnell era. Well worth a look if you're planning on discovering Classic Era Who. Mx

A good reminder of what science fiction is about
Easily one of Doctor Who's most neglected stories, due to being one of the last VHS releases and very late in the DVD schedule too. These two factors combined with much of fandom heading straight for a colour story, means that a viewing of The Sensorites should come as something of a surprise. What Peter R Newman has written and the majority of the actors execute is intelligent science fiction. Added to which we have Hartnell in top form and very strong performances from Susan and Barbara. Ian always gives strong performances. The humans on the spaceship are good also, particularly John, whose delivery of lines are exceptional. The majority of The Sensorites is excellent dialogue, concepts and ideas, and performances from the cast. The costumes are rather good yet amazingly simple. Two main criticisms would be that, by today's standards it is a little slow and that the episode 6 ending is ironically too rushed and some details of the conclusion which should be seen are not. Hartnell fluffs his lines once, but then so do two other actors; they did not have the luxury then of retakes. The fact that the pace is perhaps too slow for some audiences is hardly a fault of The Sensorites but the era it is from, as is to a large extent the fluffing of lines; it still happens today, but they can simply do retakes ad-infinitum until everyone gets it right. The fact that some points are a little too laboured is again because it is 1964, but it is unfortunate that the story's conclusion happened a little earlier to allow all events satisfactorily concluded. The first 45 minutes at least are worthy of 5 stars for dramatic quality. The rest is four stars and to be fair to newer stories that are perhaps easier to watch for modern audiences, I will give this release four stars overall. It is always great when more Doctor Who episodes are found. But when you only watch a story line this every ten years or so, it feels like a discovery in itself to see it again. The extras are interesting if a little drawn out. The Peter R Newman feature is likely to stir up different reactions as it is very long for the amount of information it reveals. Some might prefer a less-fashionable but more concise bog standard instant-facts documentary. Dragging it out to twenty minutes not only helps to labour the point that there are some people we know nothing about, but ironically gives some insight into the documentary makers themselves. Another small featurette shows us the unenviable difficulties a vision mixer has.Having loved most of 2011's new Doctor Who, and been recently watching Lost, The Sopranos and Heroes, I have, if anything, an even greater appreciation now for early Doctor Who and have thoroughly enjoyed watching The Sensorites. I hope now that it gets a positive "reconsideration" now by fandom.

Like it
Arrived in good time. I used to watch Doctor Who back in the sixties when it first came on TV so this takes me back to my childhood. Special effects are not great as they are today, but what I like is that the stories are good and you care about the characters.

Nothing quite like William Hartnell as the Doctor
Nothing quite like William Hartnell as the Doctor, the young ones simply do not cut it! Need another one of similar ilk, and bring back Susan as granddaughter - albeit new actors would be needed - get it back to its original conception. Barbara and Ian superb to.

A good slower story about nice aliens in trouble.
This is from the first season of doctor who in 1963-64. It's a fine little story about friendly aliens. The film looks good and I wish we had more of this show left to watch. This is not a action serial and it's very low budget. But the show was always good and well done in spite of that. I collect "doctor who"so this is must own for me. The show is in black and white unfortunately but that's how they filmed it. The version I got is from Europe. I highly recommend buying a all region 3d blu ray player , it will play anything from anywhere in the world.
