The Pretty Things

-Start the Band off Rockin' -
Yes, It's the start to a Bright Sun shinin' Morn. Time to get ready for work, start Breakfast. You know Get ready for the Day!What to listen to..To give you that extra Morning Kick!(?)Well, I know it's different for everybody, but for me it is this album by The Pretty Things. Now, this is an absolute treat to listen to. I don't know a whole lot about the history of The Pretty Things, since I just started listening to them about a couple months ago, an Amazon friend of mine mentioned them to me. I do know that The Pretty Things were more under-rated than the 'Big' names in the '60s - The Rolling Stones, The Beach Boys & The Beatles, even The Animals seem to be heard of more. Although it's kind of sad, since to me, this Band is honestly a lot better! They just sound More Wild and exciting especially with this Ecstatic, R&B, Bluesy type of Sound. This s/t album was first released in 1965, and it was The Pretty Things first release. This is my third Pretty Things album, and although I do love "Parachute" and "S.F. Sorrow" - I have been playing this one a lot more recently, actually every morning for the last three weeks or so. Yes, this is My Morning Wake-Up Call!I never have had more fun with a Blues - Rock type of album before!I have heard the song "Roadrunner" before, I never knew it was by The Pretty Things though- until I got this album that is.Other Favorites of mine are, "Big City" - "Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut" -"She's Fine She's Mine" - "Don't Lie to Me" - "Pretty Thing"- "Rosalyn" (hit)- "Big Boss Man" & "Don't Bring Me Down"-Of course for me every song is a Winner! It is too bad, they aren't mentioned as frequently as all those other Bands that helped shape what Rock Music sounds like for future generations.- A pure & fresh sounding Passion that seems to be missed in the Rock world these days.

Early British Blues with attitude
Badder than the Stones, they had longer hair and grittier blues. I bought the LP in 1965 and fell in love with it. This is the first work by an innovative band that flowed with the times and are acknowledged by many as having created the first rock opera "S.F. Sorrow" (before "Tommy"). Blues-oriented, and superb covers of "Road Runner", "Pretty Things" and others. A must for fans of early British blues, IMHO. It has been hard to find, so this CD is most welcome.

It's a start...
I got into The Pretties at about mid-stream: the wonderful "Parachute". I have gotten both this CD & "Get the Picture?" in the past few months, hearing both for the first time 40 years late. The liner notes for the Snapper edition make clear that this was a pretty thrown-together affair & almost didn't happen at all due to the boys', ahem, "lack of seriousness". These conditions definitely show in the performances, but it actually serves to make the album endearing. With all the attention given in recent years to sounding like a garage band, this is an early template.Actually, what I like best so far is how it compares with "Get the Picture?", showing a great leap forward on the second release in terms of arrangements & tightness. This album is valuable for its full-on attack & the sense that it all could have burst apart at the seams. It is raw & it is raucous, but it also takes aim at a much brighter future, which, though they certainly deserved better, never panned out for them. Maybe not essential, but Pretty doggone important!

Pretty Things - self-titled (Snapper)
First released in 1965, this was the band's first album. With this CD reissue, looks like you get the lp's original ten songs, plus eight (8) bonus tracks. This title freakin' SMOKES! More bluesy than I had expected. Trust me, in THIS case, that's a good thing. Most happening cuts are "Roadrunner", "13, Chester Street", the blues rocking "Big City", "Mama, Keep Your Big Mouth Shut", their unforgettable single "Rosalyn" and "Big Boss Man". Believe this is the earliest work of the Pretty Things I've ever heard. Will appeal to fans of early Stones, Yardbirds, The Animals, The Who and The Action. Highly recommended.

Pretty is as Pretty does........
My brother and I bought the original Pretty Things LP in the UK back in the 60s. Somewhere along the beaten trail, it got lost between Connecticut and Los Angeles in one move or another, much to our dismay. So, I got two of the remastered CDs (one for each of us). I've been playin' mine over and over 'cause, they just don't make 'em like the "Things" anymore, HA! My brother will be getting his for his 62nd B'Day in a few weeks. He still has super long hair, earrings and leads an organic lifestyle.....Rock on Lou!

underated
If I could set the "way-back machine" grab Sherman and head back to 1965,I would have been this band's most ardent fan.How could I have missed these guys? What a shame that they never got their dues here in the States. This a fabulous release! Arguably one of the strongest L.P.s released in '65.Gritty,loud & dangerous...hmmm...wonder why they failed to register on homoginated American radio airways of 1965?This is worth every cent spent!Seek it out...buy it...and play it...LOUD!!!

Great addition to the mighty Pretty Things repertoire.
Classic final 2018 live performance by a much underrated British Invasion era band that should be forever known for creating the first real concept album SF Sorrow in 1968 .No doubt about it Pretty Things rule! Available in several formats, this final live album performance has crystal clear sound on double LP and features several tracks from SF Sorrow.

WELTKLASSE!
Absolut Empfehlenswert!

As It Was In The Beginning....
What an absolutely marvellous box set this is. And how well deserved it is, by a band that have paid their dues, walked the hard roads, and kept the faith for well over fifty years.I have always loved the Pretties. Loved them for their passion. Loved them for their willingness to keep moving forward, and above all, loved them for keeping their soul. They never pandered to the tyranny of the marketplace. Cared little for prevailing fashions, and always carried the flame for real music by real people in both bad times and good. The fact that performers of the calibre of Dave Gilmour and Van Morrison took part in this wonderful concert shows just how well-respected they are in the profession they have given their lives to.Considering the amount of material in this set - two CDs, two DVDs, a ten track vinyl album of material selected by Phil May and Dick Taylor, and a marvellous hardback book stuffed full of all kinds of lovely things - it provides excellent value for money. The concert itself is quite extraordinary. No less than three separate sets covering material from all stages of the band's career, all played with the trademark ragged & glorious swagger we have known and loved for fifty five years. It is a joy from start to finish, which is an extraordinary achievement in itself given the fragile state of Phil May's health at the time. Something you would never suspect listening to the full on performance he delivers across the nearly two and a half hours the concert lasted. And if you have any doubt about the accuracy of what I have said, cop a listen to the absolutely, searingly, ferocious thirteen minute version of L.S.D / Old Man Going that closes out the main concert. I challenge ANY band of twenty or thirty somethings to come anywhere close to what you will hear - the entire band, plus special guest Dave Gilmour, locking together perfectly to deliver one of the best all-out rock and roll performances you are ever likely to hear.If you love real rock music, played by people who love what they do, do yourself a major favour and buy this box set. You will absolutely love what you hear. You will play it again and again. And you will celebrate, and re-celebrate, the glorious closing chapter of this extraordinary band, over, and over, and over. Because, sadly they will never pass this way again. And we're much the poorer for that!
