Pretty unique and interesting
So my first exposure to any of the characters was through the Flashpoint story. For a good while I thought one of the characters in some panels was Red Hood until I recently learned it's a character named the Grifter. I was intrigued by him and looked up more about his character. After a while of searching I learned about Jim Lee and his work. I was amazed by his artistic style of drawing so I knew I had to read his first solo work WildC.A.T.S. At first it took me a while to get used to this universe and really grasp what the story was about. It's one if those stories where you kinda have to read it a second time to understand what just happened. If I had to describe it I would say it's like X-Men, Men in Black, and S.H.I.E.L.D all had a love child named WildC.A.T.S. It was a fun read and the art is phenomenal.

The Beginning
It's strange and really quite amazing...the Wildstorm Universe, which would later go on to birth tons of great stories, began here. It's amazing and difficult to comprehend because what we have here really isn't very good. The cover really says it all: Big guns! Big boobs! Swords and blades! Lasers! It doesn't imply any complexity, which is quite truthful because there isn't any complexity to be found here. It's not entirely fair to bash these first four issues of Wildcats for what they are, because, let's face it, they are an exact reflection of popular comics in the 90's. Big, flashy art, story with little thought and...GO! But it is infuriating in a way, because already, even in these four issues, the Wildcats (both the individual members and story at large) already have so much potential. A covert alien war that has been going on for thousands of years on Earth? Aliens doing such things as manipulating organized crime and controlling the body of the Vice President of the US? The ambition here is big and the potential for truly interesting storytelling ideas are here, it's just none of those ideas are tapped into and everything eventually devolves into a fight scene. And the fight scenes...well, they're certainly here. Literally at least half of the book's pages are dedicated to fight scenes. That leaves less than half of the time for little things like, you know, story and character development. The writing is, simply, a massive problem. The pacing is rushed, elements in the overall story itself often make little sense and the dialogue is, well...how about an example? A character gets a sword in the head. Response to situation? Maul: "Yow! Talk about a splitting headache!" The book is full of things like that.Lee's art though is magnificent. It's exactly what it needs to be for a story like this; big, flashy, dominating, and beautiful. It's also quite clear, which is extremely helpful when a page has 8-10 characters punching and shooting one another. It truly drives the book. Lee's character designs are also very striking. Helspont looks amazing. Grifter, Zealot, Warblade...even lesser characters like Pike or miscellaneous Daemonites look great. The art is assisted quite nicely by the coloring as well. The coloring really make Lee's images pop. The art is more than the saving grace for this book, it is its existence. In spite of all its problems though, if you are a fan of the Wildstorm Universe I would say that this, unfortunately, is an essential book. It's the introduction to characters, ideas, and storylines that excellent writers later go on to pull amazing things from. It's just too bad that THIS is how it all began.

Klassischer Image Comic
