Very good but not much of it
This is a bit of a specialty item as it is used in incense pots to hold stick incense upright, in our house before a Buddhist shrine. It consists of pure white volcanic ash finer than flour. Rub it between your fingers and you can feel no grit whatsoever. It is fluffy and extremely light weight. Judging from the illustration, I thought I would receive quite a large bag but it actually is very small. Our incense bowl is 4" diameter, 4" high and I needed five bags to fill it. And fill it you must because the ash is so fine that the sticks will fall over if there is only an inch or so in the bottom. Left to my own devices, I probably would have filled the bowl with clean white sand but my significant other is Taiwanese and convinced me that this ash is the correct material to use. So....if you need this rare item you can buy it with confidence. Just remember to buy more than you think you'll need.

Great find
Smells new, packaged nicely, small enough to keep in the incense burner tray. Haven't tried it yet cause I'm still waiting on some other items to arrive in the mail. For my birthday my husband got me that full package fancy incense burner with the jars, tools and brushes, incense sticks, ect. He paid a pretty dollar for the whole set just for them to send us a used one with most of the important items missing like the white ash. So thank you for selling the white ash by itself

Works great for burning stick incense
The amount of ash provided is perfect for one of the handcrafted bowls Shoyeido sells. I'm surprised that people think this is overpriced; it's quality material, made to measure for purpose, and does exactly the job it's supposed to. With a little care it will easily support any length of stick (including monster 20cm sticks) and they all burn all the way down, leaving no stubs. Less than seven dollars for the perfect burning medium is good value to me.

The perfect medium for coreless incense sticks and charcoal burners.
Great for use with Japanese "coreless" incense together with a nice incense bowl. Will also serve perfectly as a bed for charcoal bricks. It is a super fine ash, so when you first open it, go slowly and carefully, or you'll end up with a big cloud of ash! I recommend spooning it into the bowl rather than pouring, although if you're careful, you can pour it in just as well. One bag will last for months of use. You can also filter it through a screen from time to time to remove any bits of unburned incense. Do that outdoors though or you'll end up with ash everywhere. Also use a jar or specialty tool to compress the ash after its in the bowl. It works bet when compressed. Highly recommended for regular incense burning!

Good for controlling flow and preventing fires.
This is for charcoal incense users. You get a brick of charcoal - unless you are burning for a rave party in a big, open area it's going to suffocate you. It burns too hot too fast. Even if you control the incense by frequently dropping a little on it it'll eat the air way to fast. Some people kill themselves this way...accidental or otherwise. This is the hidden component - ash - and this is the best kind. Burn the Coal in a thick earthenware bowl - on top of sand. That's so it doesn't cause a fire. Light the coal and put incense on it, then - with tongs - rub it down into the incense and push some ash on top of it. You can turn it off (smother) with plenty of ash though a lid should be used. But to control the flow so it outputs like a standard incense stick this is the best. A little ash on top slows it down. And as the charcoal burns and the incense is burned it adds to the ash. I've also found this useful with standard sticks as a safety precaution. My favorite is Nag-Champa Goloka brand incense sticks... Again I use a big earthenware cup - a mushroom I did in a ceramics class long ago. Very thick walls. I fill sand in the bottom the put some of the ash in top and mix it a little. Then as the sticks burn and ash falls the fireproof base absorbs the heat and suffocates any deep fires. If I get distraccted I can "Turn off" the incense sticks by simply turning them upside down in the ash - they will keep burning slowly in sand but will go out immediately in the ash - this also stops ruining the sticks by wetting them or risking a fire by flicking the head off which is still burning and can set a carpet on fire.

Perfect
Don't let the size of the package fool you. There's a lot of ash in the package. I wasn't sure when I ordered this ash and if it would be enough to fill my container. I admit when I opened the shipping box; it surprised me at how small it was. I used less than half of the 38 grams to fill the incense plate I have. This is a great product. I will purchase it again. Five stars!

Not true white
Perfectly functional ash for burning incense on but the color is not white. This is dull grey ash as if there is already burnt ash mixed in. I won’t buy from this brand again since I want a bright white ash as shown in the blue bowl.

No more end bits.
Very lightweight and holds incense well. I love how the incense continue to burn even after they've burned into the ash, so the entire stick is used. When I've tried wooden or ceramic incense burners, a bit gets left at the end, but not with ash! It's wonderful. I paid about $15 (incl. S+T) for 2 bags of this ash here on Amazon, but could have bought them both elsewhere for under $5US. I stumbled upon a wonderful Japanese candle and incense vendor and was pleasantly surprised that generally, Japanese vendors sell Shoyeido (and other) incense at least 50% less than anything I've found on Amazon or an all-English web marketplace. In fact I've noticed, on average, there's a 400% markup, so I strongly encourage readers to shop around. For example, here on amazon, a box of En-mei Shoyeido - En-mei Circle 12 Bundles 450 Premium Daily is priced between $210-240 however, I purchased this exact same box for $60USD.

Exactly what I was looking for! I use Japanese incense without the bamboo core and had a helluva time finding a holder that would catch all the ashes and hold a full stick straight without having to snap it in half first. Pro tip: pack the ashes down first to make it dense enough to hold the incense. This is so much better than cleaning grimy ceramic holders after burning a stick. The bag of ash is smaller than I expected but I’m happy with the quality. A bag is about as big as the palm of my hand.
