Bellamy's now-standard ingredients, with one prominent exception - comedy
The fourth novel has Bellamy's now-standard ingredients, with one prominent exception - comedy. The narrative embraces two badly troubled marriages. Three of the five principals are fairly unlikeable. There is also a death which occurs in the most appalling circumstances. The novel contains a suspiciously happy ending - the two marriages become much less troubled and the three unlikeables become rather more pleasant. It's written in Bellamy's characteristic light-hearted style and is an easy read, but I'm curious as to his intentions. Was this a deliberate move away from comedy (although there are some amusing lines) or was it simply a misjudgement?

The Nudists by Guy Bellamy
Absolutely wonderful book - its fantastic. Read it so many times - but it didn't have a real ending - so I ended up writing to Guy to ask him if he was going to write a sequal - unfortunately he hasn't - what a shame - but I still treasure my signed copy. I love it - so much so - I'm going to Menorca in September to try and find the places he wrote about - but I'm definitely going to Fornells! Actually reading it again at the moment - but they haven't reached Spain for the second time. It must be something to do with the really warm weather!

Bitter-sweet pleasure
I've re-read this book nearly , what, a 100 times? why? Guy Bellamy is maybe the only author I know that can make you laugh out loud at the desparately sorry state some people find themselves in. A beautifully weaved (and funny ... did i say funny? YES) plot containig a very palatable sideways repost to the radically feminist world. Loved it.... (Loved A Village called Sin even more) Your friends will want to steal it!!

Predictabilty is predictable.
This book was trash. Absoloute trash. I.E. no redeeming value. Sure, Nick is funny as a character, but that doens't save this book. The characters are shallow, vain, and, frankly, pathetic. Bellamy kills off the three year old to try to add tragic drama, but as a plot device it suffers terribly - mostly becuase we haven't seen much of the kid in the book, and so we really don't care about him. This book was sad trash - not reccomeneded.

Great bit of literary fun.
I was reading this book more as a time waster to start with. But it soon took over all my spare minutes. I found myself reading at midnight or early morning when I should have been asleep! I loved the easy style of this, the twists and turns, ups and downs. Some of them predictable, others not. It lightly echoed my own personal lifestyle and the wrong choices I made many years ago. I'm now off to get some more of Guy Bellamy stories to read when on holiday!

Disagreeable people being disagreeable
The main problem with this book is that the characters are so unsympathetic - I could not warm to any of them; they are self-serving and uninteresting people. My jaw hit the ground at the accolades that this is a "comic" book - full of subtle wit - when toward the end the greatest, most gut-wrenching, tragedy that can befall any young family slips casually into the narrative.

enjoyable read
Have read many of this authors books over the years and enjoyed them all.

Reggie Perrin meets Carry On...
But without the laughs. Very dated humour, may well have been funny in the 70's. I actually found it very readable as it is well written but struggled to find the humour of this 'comic novel' in the subjects tackled, namely domestic violence, the death of a child from drowning and miscarriage.
