The way everything fits together I'm sure it needs to be in the corner. I'm also sure though if you are someone who tinkers in wood working you could make it work away from the corner. As far as cosmetically appealing, its pretty open in the back and if it were in the middle of a room I wouldn't want to look at it all the time. The company that sold us this piece were very good in their communications with us. They could certainly answer your questions about every aspect of the unit. I hope this helps.
