Belgian Malinois (Comprehensive Owner's Guide)

This is a fantastically informative book to give you a primer on owning a Belgian Malinois. A "docile" dog of this breed is a high drive dog for any other breed. They are at the top of the pack in terms of absolutely awesome dogs, but they run on uranium so you need to be prepared. If properly bred, you can definitely have a Malinois as a family pet as we do, but even if you are an experienced dog person, you need to prepare yourself for one of these working dogs. They are equal parts love, drive, intelligence, and energy. They require (demand) lots of exercise- if you don't provide this they will tear your house to the ground. But once you and your Malinois are in sync, you'll have a friend for life.

These books are nice for high level information. Worth having for a reference guide.

There are a lot of good details about the breed itself, and there's also a lot of generic dog care pointers as well.While I would't call it "Comprehensive," per se, I think it is superior to the generic breed books of the past.I've had Bernese Mountain Dogs for 30 years, and my current dog is my first Malinois. This book did a good job in preparing me for the energy and behavior differences in the two breeds (no, it doesn't mention Berners) and I figured I'd gotten a different critter completely after reading.Good book.

I wish there was more information about training, toys, and activities specifically for this breed.

I have bought 4 different books about this breed. This one is my favorite. It discussed history and breed standard, not just another basic you have a puppy now do this book.

I think someone else already said this, but it has little to no information exclusively for or about malinois and I doubt the writer has even met one. It's just a basic owners guide filled with stuff you could find in an opinion-less pamphlet with only a few brief summaries on the history and physiology of the malinois you could find on wikipedia, and pictures from dog shows.

Excellent reference to reread as you and your Malinois learn about each other. The book covers breed traits and history, puppy selection, training guidelines and expectations, health issues, care and feeding, competitions. Like a Reader Digest condensed version of a Malinois encyclopedia! Great primer.
