SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY [4K UHD]

I personally think that "Solo: A Star Wars Story" is the most fun to watch, and re-watch, of all of the Star Wars movies or stories on my shelf, so far. See it for yourself and let the story take you on the adventure. The people, creatures, and droids in this movie's universe are very entertaining to watch. The characters are charismatic and each has their own unique sense of humor. They have believable personality and dimension, like they seem to all have histories and habits of their own that the viewer can easily pick up on and be fascinated by. The costumes and the technology that are shown on the screen all seem to be impeccably crafted and chosen for each moment. The starships, speeders, and other hardware run the full range from being total galactic oil-spewing lemons to being top-of-the-line luxury models--what's not to love? I highly recommend this movie as an essential partvof your Star Wars movie collection. Happy watching.

I'll admit that when this first came out a badmouthed this movie quite a bit. Like really? Did we need to know more about Han Solo? How could anyone come close to Harrison Ford? Why can't we get an original star wars story that has nothing to do with the old movies? However, now that it's been a while and my original outrage is over, I saw it again and actually--it's not bad. It's actually a pretty fun movie. The actors playing Han and Lando nail the performance, the cast overall is pretty top notch, and the story is pretty fun, suspenseful, and interesting. I hope they make a sequel or tv show out of it because I'd like to see these characters continue to grow. I'd like to see Han Solo transform into a more cynical, sarcastic, and jaded character. I'd like to see the the Hutt gang grow and rub shoulders with the other cartels. TLDR: It's funny, has great action, great acting, great casting, and a pretty good star wars feel to it. Highly recommend.

Like many people, I was discouraged from watching SOLO by the negative buzz surrounding its production, and by the rancid aftertaste of THE LAST JEDI. I skipped it during its theatrical release and rented it mostly out of a still-lingering sense of duty to the franchise, which since 1977 has been a tentpole of my moviegoing existence. My expectations were cellar-low, but the final product surprised me. This is a highly entertaining movie, one that comes at STAR WARS both from a famliar and unusual angle simultaneously. Despite its problems, which are many, it delivers a real "original universe" feel and many memorable moments. SOLO begins on the awful, ugly, Imperial-occupied world of Corellia, about three years after the fall of the Republic. Young Han (Alden Ehrenreich) and his girlfriend Qi'ra (Emilia Clarke) are fleeing the loathsome gangster Lady Proxima (a big centipede-like monster voiced by Linda Hunt), whom Han, naturally, owes money. Han manages to escape by enlisting in the Imperial army, but is separated from Qi'ra. Vowing to return and rescue her, he goes off to fight for the Emperor as a pilot. Unfortunately for him, he ends up in the infantry. Unhappy as cannon fodder, he tries to join up with a band of thieves led by the ruthless Beckett (Woody Harrelson), and soon meets his future partner in crime, Chewbacca (Joonas Suatamo). Beckett is looking to heist a large quantity of valuable coaxium from the Empire, but naturally things don't go as he planned, and now everybody's in trouble with Dryden Vos (Paul Bettany), who wants his coaxium, dammit, and won't shy away from slaughtering the lot of Beckett's crew if he doesn't get it. Enter smooth criminal Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover), who just happens to own the fastest hunka junk in the galaxy, the Millennium Falcon, a ship which will be perfect to effect the robbery...if only Han can get his hands on it. Meanwhile, Solo's real goal amid all this deception and thievery is just to get his girlfriend back. If she wants to come, that is. If that sounds a bit busy for STAR WARS film, imagine everything I'm leaving out, including a surprise appearance by a Sith Lord, the Force alone knows how many double-crosses, and the band of rival thieves led by Enfys Nest (Erin Kellyman). But most of it actually works within the context of the story, which is all about the seamy underbelly of the Empire: a place where criminal gangs run all commerce with the tacit permission of the newly-minted but already-corrupt Empire. And in fact some critics point out that SOLO is little more than a "heist movie" set in the STAR WARS universe. That is true, and the streak of amoralism, gritty, dark-lit cinematography and relative lack of truly likeable characters place it in a weird, vaguely "space Noir" category. Furthermore, Alden Ehrenreich is too lightweight of an acting presence to really carry the badass solo mantle -- the writers, just as they did in the execrable FORCE AWAKENS, chose to make him more a bumbling comedian than the edgy, amoral, shoot-first space pirate of the original movie. There is some needless pandering "fan service" and some laughable SWJ s**t mixed in as well, in keeping with the abandonment of the good vs. evil motif of the first six films in favor of heavy-handed political messaging. But none of this individually nor all of it in combination was enough to keep me from enjoying the movie. Here's why. SOLO, as I said above, is really about life in the sleazy, corrupt, capriciously brutal Empire. There's no moral center to a universe without the Jedi, and it shows. Crime is the norm, slavery is practiced in the open, and the Empire doesn't care about anything except expanding its own power. In fact, the best sequences in the movie are nearly all in the brief period in which we see Solo fighting as a foot soldier for the emperor -- gritty combat sequences on a dark, mud-drowned planet against an unseen enemy. I could have watched an entire movie about life as an Imperial footsoldier, and frankly, I wish I had. But if Ehrenreich is a bit pale in his role, Harrelson's charmingly treacherous Beckett carries much of the film -- and what he doesn't, Glover's suave, poker-playing Calrissian does. And the scene where Solo meets Chewie for the first time is actually one of the cleverer moments I've seen in a movie in a long time. I geues what I'm trying to say here is that although this film lacks the scope of ROGUE ONE, it has something that flick lacked, which is humor; and while slightly infected with b.s. political content like the sequel films, VII and VIII, the preaching doesn't ruin the movie. It may be just an overplotted, joke-heavy heist film, but I found myself wanting to see it again when it was finished...which is more than I can say about any STAR WARS film since the flawed but ultimately satisfying REVENGE OF THE SITH.

I very much enjoyed this movie, though I'll admit I'm the only one in the family who gives it five stars – most hover around 4. But how can I not like a Ron Howard movie, not to mention: 1) an action movie, 2) how Solo got his last name, 3) why Solo wasn't sure Lando would greet him with friendliness, 4) how Solo and Chewie met, 5) what is a Kessel Run, 6) Lando's capes! Not to mention scenes that harken back to the original film trio, such as: "This is a thermal detonator." In Bonus Feature E, Ron Howard says, "One of the things that really interested me about this story is that it's about a person choosing an outlaw's life. And it's really important for this young guy to quickly understand that this life of thievery is not romantic." If you buy it on disc, you have many options for languages and subtitles: Languages – English, English Descriptive Audio, French Subtitles – English, French, Dutch, Danish, Suomi, Norwegian, Syenska I LOVE Bonus Features, especially if they give me insights into the director's plan for the movie and "making of" scenes. With BluRay, you get a whole 2nd disc of Bonus Features, which have even more subtitle options – English, CESKE, Nederlands, French, German, Magyar, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Spanish, and two more (I cannot, unfortunately, read the characters). BONUS FEATURES: ....A... "Solo: The Director & Art Roundtable" (22 minutes) After filming, Ron Howard (director) asks 8 actors to join him at a roundtable (actually an octagon) to discuss the movie. Commentators include Alden Ehrenreich (plays Han), Donald Glover (plays Lando Calrissian), Joonas Suotamo (plays Chewbacca), Emilia Clarke (plays Qi'ra), Phoebe Waller-Bridge (plays L3-37), Thandie Newton (plays Val), Woody Harrelson (plays Tobias Beckett) and Paul Bettany (plays Dryden Vos). Everybody was over the moon, including Howard, when George Lucas visited the set, and challenged Ron to a game of dejarik = holo-chess. Howard asks, Who inspired you for your role? Thandie replies, "There was a woman who grew up in Zimbabwe in the Colonial Era, and, who, in the 70s ... was part of the independent struggle in Zimbabwe. She left because members of her friendship group had been assassinated because of the struggles. She found herself in England when she was in a really difficult, sometimes racist environment. She struggled through that, she raised a family. And that was my mom." ....B... "Remaking the Millennium Falcon" (5 minutes) New commentators include Lee Sandales (set decorator), James Clyne (design supervisor), John Swartz (producer), Liam Georgensen (asst. art director), Neil Lamont (production designer) and Alistair Bullock (art director). As Donald Glover notes, "The Falcon in this movie is brand new." ....D... "Escape From Corella" (10 minutes) New commentators include Simon Emanuel (producer), Rob Bredow (special effects supervisor, producer), Gary Tomkins (art director), Ben Collins (stunt performer) and Matthew Samway (ILM). The Corella world was created new, because it is only mentioned in dialogue in Episode V. As much as possible of the car chase on Corella was done for real rather than special effects. Really enjoyed how they made and ran the stolen speeder. Tomkins says they used stuff like baguette warmers from a local supermarket and a refueling nose cone of a military jet. .....E... "The Train Heist" (14 minutes) New commentators include Paul Marsh (senior model maker), Nick Fulton (Italy production manager), Bradford Young (director photography) and Charles Jellis (action vehicles chargehand). The background snow scenes were filmed in the Italian mountains. Fulton, "We managed to get 250 people up here, and a Wookie. Getting that amount of people on top of a mountain brings its own challenges. So we built roads as far as we an, and then operating the four helicopters bringing people in and out." ....F... "Team Chewie" (7 minutes) New commentators include Tim Nielsen (sound editor and designer) and Maria Cork (supervising animatronic designer). Per Nielsen, Chewie "is introduced as a man-eating beast with this massive roar.... The main recording of Chewbacca is a bear that Ben Burtt, the original sound designer, recorded many many years ago." ....G... "Becoming a Droid: L3-37" (5 minutes) New commentators include T J Falls (visual effects producer) and Karin Cooper (digital artist supervisor). It is marvelous how they filmed Waller-Bridge and illustrates why the robot's movements are so human-like. ....H... "Scoundrels, Droids, Creatures and Cards: Welcome to Fort Ypso" (8 minutes) New commentator Neil Scanlon (creature effects). The Lodge is the "tough seedy bar" where Han meets Lando, and joins the card game of Sabaac. ....I... "Into the Maelstrom: The Kessel Run" (7 minutes) Jonathan Kasdan quotes Han in the first Star Wars movie, "This is the ship that made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs." He continues, "That is a nonsensical statement. A parsec is a unit of distance, not a unit of speed. So, what did he mean when he said that?" The movie explains. Tim Nielsen on his work on the Kessel Run: "Coaxium canisters are about to explode, so that was really fun trying to figure out what's the sound of these decaying metal canisters. I saw this video on youtube years ago of somebody dropping a Gummi Bear into potassium chlorate. It causes the Gummi Bear to spontaneously combust." Voila! ....J... "Delted Scenes" (6 minutes) Eight deleted scenes, including how Han got into the Imperial Infantry in the first place. I have such a good time watching this prequel! Happy Reader

I was a kid when I saw Star Wars in the movie theatre. Since then beginning with the 4th movie I felt as if the storyline became stale, repetitive, boring, and lacked imagination or vision. I lost all interest about that time. Looking for a good read on a long trip I read Karen Traviss Clone Commandos series on a whim and was enthralled to learn there was a world based around SW which didn't involve regurgitating the Skywalker Canonical ad naseum. Rogue 1 affirmed that, and now Han Solo has just added to a brilliant line on the SW SciFi. Forget about the bad reviews you've read here. The acting was engaging, the characters casted impeccably, the story exciting. Forget about the political druck about Disney this and Disney that. Simply not true at all. They put together a first rate and wrongfully maligned film. Apparently they were too bright for some old tired dull SW fans who should probably just keep watching the original on VHS while sipping folgers. Watch it, then watch Rogue 1 on a rainy day.

Ho acquistato la versione 3D perchè appassionato di 3D (possiedo un proiettore con matrice nativa 4K d'alta qualità e luminosità, adoro i prodotti 3D). Catena Audio con pre e finali Krell. Purtroppo l'audio italiano non è disponibile. C'è la traccia inglese, polacca e tedesca. L'inglese in DTS ( fondamentalmente mediocre, purtroppo, piatto e ben poco dinamico) che è l'unica che ho usato per via del fatto che conosco bene questa sola lingua delle tre. Da quanto ne so non esiste una versione italiana in 3D (come sempre più spesso accade da anni) e questo è davvero triste, perchè se è vero che la lingua inglese per me non rappresenta un problema è anche vero che andrà a finire che godrò della visione di questo disco sempre da solo (...) il 3D non è molto evidente. Alcuni passaggi sono lievemente più riusciti della media in termini qualitativi (definitivamente piuttosto bassi). La maggior parte delle scene è scura. Il mio proiettore è di fascia top, con una profondità nelle ombre "proverbiale" (per essere un digitale, beninteso) per cui alla fine riesco a godere l'intero film, ma immagino che con proiettori meno "generosi" in apertura delle ombre questo film si possa godere ben poco. Per quanto riguarda la qualità video direi in definitiva che si tratti d'un bluray mediocre (naturalmente ho visionato anche la versione 2D, scarsa in termini di contrasto e dettaglio come la versione 3D). Il contenuto filmico invece è del tutto piacevole e pienamente godibile: uno spin-off riuscito sotto ogni punto di vista. Un minimo di spoiler (parziale): a parte gli elementi Han Solo, Chewbecca, Lando e Millenium Falcon si potrebbe considerare un film del tutto autonomo, pienamente godibile al di fuori del ciclo di Star Wars. La storia è consistente, gli effetti speciali spettacolari, i colpi di scena non mancano, la storia sentimentale del protagonista è sviluppata degnamente e gli attori sono all'altezza della situazione, sempre. Il film lo considero da otto pieno, uno dei migliori acquisti di quest'anno, indubbiamente.

Für Star Wars-Fans eine schwere Zeit: Erst kam "Die letzten Jedi" in die Kinos, viele enttäuschte Fans mussten erst mal den Film verdauen und schon stand in wenigen Monaten der nächste Star-Wars-Film an, ein Ableger, und das über Han wie er den Rasenden Falken bekam und Chewie kennenlernte. Muss das sein? Viele wollten ein Zeichen setzen und sahen sich den Film nicht an, da sie von "Die letzten Jedi" enttäuscht worden waren. Dabei standen die Sterne um den Film zu "Solo" unter keinem allzu gutem Stern: Erst die heftige Kritik der Fans über TLJ und dann der Regie-Wechsel bei "Solo". Mit Ron Howard konnte Kathleen Kennedy einen sehr berühmten und beliebten Regisseur engagieren und das tat dem Film doch sehr gut (das sage ich jetzt zwar obwohl ich die Ursprüngliche Fassung nicht kenne, aber ich sage es mal so ;-) ). Einen Star-Wars-Film zu drehen dürfte wohl eine der größten Ehren eines Regisseurs sein, genauso wie einen James-Bond-Film drehen zu dürfen, aber es ist nun mal eine Kategorie die sich nicht jeder Filmemacher zutraut, zumal derjenige dann auch nur seine eigene Vision umsetzen kann und nicht die von den Fans. Dabei entstand mit "Solo - A Star Wars Story" eine durchaus sehr solide, gute Verfilmung einer Figur die die Fans ähnlich wie Luke Skywalker sehr schätzen und es wurden sogar einige Dinge übernommen die es in Romanen zu lesen gab. Auch wenn ich mir den Flug durch den Mahlstrom etwas anders vorgestellt hatte, aber dennoch war dieser sehr gut und schlüssig umgesetzt. Apropos Umsetzung: Das Bild ist, genau wie bei Rogue One, ein wenig zu dunkel geraten, was für die 3D-Version eher von Nachteil ist. Florian Clyde macht einen HERVORRAGENDEN Job als Synchronsprecher für die Rolle vom jungen Han Solo. Aber generell fand ich die deutsche Synchronisation sehr gelungen und man bekommt auch viele prominente Sprecher zu hören. Das Bonusmaterial ist auch super geworden. Ich werde mir "Solo" mit Sicherheit genauso oft und gerne ansehen wie "Rogue One". Fazit: Ein Film der mir sehr gut gefallen hat, mit vielen guten Momenten.
