Is there enough space for an american size mug to be placed just below the spout?

No can't fit a mug under not even a tea cup size one. This machine is to draw espresso. i have a double shot glass that i draw mine into and then a steel frothing cup which fits fine because the arm rotates out. you then pour both into the cup of choice. This machine is absolutely awesome. Sturdy design and materials. if you have been through a couple now that break down due to plastic construction you will love the durability of this Rancilio

Does this product feature plastic water reservoir and other plastic water line conduit components? Of concern here are the potential health effects...

You aren't going to find any espresso machine with a stainless steel water tank. Cost isn't the only issue. Only certain formulas of stainless will not actually be prone to corrosion when constantly immersed in water. Water quality, including alkalinity and dissolved solids and minerals can also react with the steel over time, though it is by nature more resistant to that than are other metals. The Silvia tank is polypropylene which was designed before BPA was even a question in people's minds and does not contain any BPA. Keep in mind that IV tubing is also sometimes made from polypropylene, so it can't be all that bad.
