For centuries pilgrimage was one of the greatest adventures on earth, involving epic journeys across the country and around the world. This series sees Simon Reeve retrace the exciting adventures of our ancestors. He meets inspirational modern travellers, sees extraordinary sights and learns about the forgotten aspects of pilgrimage, including the vice, thrills and dangers, that all awaited travellers. He explores the faith, the hopes, desires, and even the food that helped to keep medieval Britons and more recent travellers on the road. In this series Simon journeys first from northern England to Canterbury. Then across France and northern Spain, before he treks high into the mighty Alps on his way to Rome. Finally he heads east to glorious Istanbul, Turkey, then on to the Holy Land and his final destination, Jerusalem. In this series Simon will immerse himself in the pilgrimage experience of the past and the present: he will walk long hard miles, travel by sea, stay with monks and Bedouins, cross deserts and check points. He will encounter the kindness of strangers and the fellowship of walking the pilgrim routes. He will often forsake the modern comforts we have come to expect when travelling; he will sleep in dormitories with other pilgrims and eat their simple food. In re-living pilgrimage he will call upon numerous contemporaneous accounts of travellers, from across the centuries. Simon will explore how medieval Christianity changed from being at the centre of life, and death, to the Victorian periphery and find the impetus for our consumer driven society s return to pilgrimage. The age of Pilgrimage is back and Simon is about to go straight into its heart. All the way to Jerusalem...

Very interesting and informative
This is a very interesting documentary. It is well researched, and the photography and presentation by Simon Reeve, outstanding. We are treated to the age-old idea of holy pilgrimage from Lindisfarne in northern England all the way to Canterbury and then to France and Spain. I learnt so much about this that was truly captivating. Simon tells his viewers that he is not a believer, but he is still able to present the story in a very meaningful way.The documentary then treats us to the journey to Istanbul, giving us a great history lesson. The last episode was most captivating. It was about the pilgrimage to the Holy Land. We visit Bethlehem, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, the Dead Sea, Jerusalem and the Via Delarosa and visit all the famous places. I have always wanted to visit these places but have been cautious about the political situation in this part of the world. This documentary has filled this desire. Thank you.

Inspirational and moving
Inspirational and at times very moving (and I'm not religious). You don't have to have to have any religious beliefs to enjoy this moving description of the joys and perils of pilgrimage. Simon Reeve is an excellent presenter who presents a fascinating insight into the process and motivations behind the medieval practice of pilgrimage. He is a thoughtful young man who presents his views with eloquence and always with respect to those who do have religious convictions. He has the ability to present an unfolding story (even as an unbeliever) with conviction and is never patronising. I found it so inspirational that I watched it several times in succession, enjoying each viewing more than the last. I will watch it many times more I suspect. My best purchase of 2016. Thoroughly recommended.

An excelent series of simon reeves on the pilgrimage trail. Reeves enthusiam for both his subject and travel is superb.Reeve makes a good (none religious ) bias to start from the uk, france spain, italy , and finally Isreal.Allowing those of a religious view to express their opinions and allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions.Excellent.
