Wondrous Weslandia - Best book read by us
Review from Oak Class - University of Cambridge Primary SchoolWe would recommend Weslandia to readers of all ages but especially those who like stories about outcasts and people who act differently. There are many themes but one of them is change because Wesley's life changed because of his plants. Wesley is an inspiration for all ages! This book makes you think that there is more happiness than just pocket money. Wesley refuses to be equal but this becomes an amazing thing. The best part for us was when Wes made mosquito repellent and sun cream. Also how it explores the theme of courage because Wesley finds his own way and acts differently to others. He is courageous enough to take a risk.Furthermore, he is creative because he makes a different sport and an alphabet. At the end there is a heart-warming picture as he creates his own world where his former tormentors are very interested. If you read Matilda you would probably love this book because they are both outcasts who eventually make friends

The best children's book I've ever come across
As a parent and book lover, I'm always on the lookout for inspirational books to share with my children and this book has delighted me in many ways. The plot is centred on a bookish and unassuming boy who - unperturbed by a gang of tormentors- sets about founding his own civilisation over the summer break. He discovers the usefulness of an amazing crop in providing for his basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter, whilst attracting the curious attention of his peers; he eventually ascends to the position of an unintentional leader. If there was ever a cool children's book character, this is it.This book is terrific for sparking off interesting discussion on a variety of topics whether it's about self-sufficiency, peer pressure, leadership, environmentalism etc.The illustrations are imaginative, stylish and beautifully detailed; perfectly suited to this story. My sons aged aged 5 and 11 still enjoy hearing this story after many, many readings.I have bought several copies to give as gifts and as classroom library donations.

An enjoyable read.
A thought provoking read for my class at school on how our world could be shaped by what we do and the choices we have. The main character Wesley is an unusual child who finds happiness in his own back garden making his own utopia, finally winning over the doubtful neighbours and neighbourhood bullies in the process. Really nice illustrations too.

Lovely and relevant book
This is a lovely book with a good moral. My son's class takes this and did literature work based on it over lockdown.

Excellent story which can be used for either KS1 or KS2 children - lots of discussion points and a great stimulus for writing.

An imaginative adventure.
My kids loved this book, as did I. It was a recommendation from their teacher, and illustrates invention, influence, confidence, and determination in a fun story.

One of the best!
My 5 year old is amazed by this book. He wants me to read it to him every evening and wants me to comment beyond on what's written. The illustrations are smart, open minded. The story is fantastic! I just wish the book was longer to enjoy more of it :)
