Question 1

what is the practical difference for the everyday user between the "premier" and the "scholar" variety, which are half as much?

Accepted Answer

I don't use colored pencils myself - I work in watercolors. These are for my kids as they have gotten older and enjoy colored pencils (they are all pretty artistic). I start them off young with Crayola and then go to Prismacolor. I have bought the Premier for them but they have been gifts at Christmas and I let them know these are not like Crayola and they have to take care of them. I found two links for you. Hope this helps! One is from a Blog: Just a Place for Cool Stuffhttp://pumibel.blogspot.com/2011/11/prismacolor-scholar-line-colored.htmlThis is the other one. I found this on a Yahoo Canada Answers link: "The Premier is the artist quality and the Scholar is the student brand. The artist quality Premier is higher quality - they have more pigment and the pencils mix better as well. Source(s): Professional artist for a long time. Colored pencil artist for 23 years and counting..."

Question 2

I am new at adult coloring books and only have basic designs. Are these okay for just basic coloring?

Accepted Answer

Marissa, right now the 24 pencil set of Prismacolor is a GREAT price $8+. Grab a set or two just to get a feel for them. My first colored pencils were Cra-Z-Art set of 72 from Wal-Mart for under $6 ! I've bought more of them because the assortment is so big and very happy with result. Cra-Z-Art also has a set of only 8-10 colors called Super Brights which really pop color, less than $2. Siva "vivid" are very nice and great price at Wal-Mart. too. Amazon carries all these but higher price . . . Friend and I started coloring at the same time and have completely different styles but we both agree on these brands and are disappointed with Prismacolor. The one exception, Prismacolor seems to have the only TRUE RED, other brands I've used are orangeish. We buy any gel pens or colored pencils we find at dollar, warehouse or 'big box' stores for a few dollars with large assortment of colors. Amazing what you find that work really good much cheaper than big name brands. Also we have found HOW you color is a major factor: she has a very light touch and complains about not getting strong color where I have a heavy hand and get much stronger color using same pencils. AND greyscale makes a gigantic difference as shading is done for you. I use lighter color first and add darker shades; she starts with dark and adds light shades. Basic design or complicated isn't really an issue it's what appeals to you and doing some experimenting. Dover or Creative Haven have mega coloring book choices at excellent prices $3-$5-6 instead of the $10-$15 books which are often disappointing. This is for FUN don't let others who are "very serious" or considered "advanced colorists" ruin the experience for you. Pick books, brands & colors that make you happy. You'll LOVE it !!!

Question 3

How do you prevent pencils from breaking, without getting a point, while sharpening them?

Accepted Answer

1. Dont sharpen to a very long point (sharpen to a short point)
2. Buy the prismacolor premiere pencil sharpener
3. Hold the pencil firmly
I did the following and with the new 72 set of pencils, i have no breakage so far

Question 4

What can the "premier" series do that the "verithin" series can't do? are both capable of being blended on paper? is one better than the other?

Accepted Answer

The Premier pencils are soft leads that blend easily and cover large areas quickly. The verithin leads are hard leads designed for outlining, tiny spaces and are not as easily blended.
