Good story but very preachy
I had enjoyed the movie and wanted to read the book. The book is a long morality tale where the preaching far overshadows the story. The story was there but it was very hard to read the book because more than half the space was preaching.Enjoyed the story part of it, even though it was hard to get past the preaching.Unfortunately, the story just ends after some last preaching. There is no real sense of what happens to the protagonists.

Great story
My son loves this book so far. I told him I'd let him watch the movie after he reads this. Apparently this is a sequel. My bad.

A must read for avid readers who enjoy an adventure, great writing most of all, and a colorful knowledge of what Africa was!
yes, this author has a fabulous command to the English language! I have read this story about 3 times, just for the words...! the story is spell binding and when we traveled to Africa it helped give me such a wonderful insight and appreciation for the country and its people. the music is awesome....and if interested, the movie "Power of One" is so similar to 'coloring' Africa for me....well, I just fell in love. Many years later a friend now recently has purchased a Rhodian Ridgeback dog...and this is why I purchased these stories for him....to read to see how smart and wonderful his dog is!!! and what a magnificent animal this breed truly is !one must read the first book in this series...A Story Like The Wind...before this book!!!!!ENJOY~!!!

All school children should read these books!!
Laurens van der Post is one of my favorite writers. Through his storytelling he stirs the spirit of the African bush that is imprinted in all of us and awakens the memory of forgotten a soulful and simple world. Van der Post brings this side our our world and inner selves back to life and "A Story Like the Wind" and the sequel "A Far off Place", again do not disappoint. Through Francois, his dog Hinza, and Bushman Xhabbo and Noonie he takes us not only on an epic journey and adventure through Africas heart, but on the journey of a boy growing up in the world and the contrasting soulful, simple life of the Bushman A Far Off Place (Harvest/Hbj Book)

Van der Post is a master talent
An excellent read like all Van der Post books. But not as exciting as the precursor, A Story Like the Wind. One should read the first book first. The book arrived in excellent condition very quickly.

A Boy's Adventure Tale
I learned a lot about living in the desert successfully from this is old-fashioned book about a boy coming of age. I loved the authorial philosophical comments, the super dog, and even the entrance of the British Navy--but not because I thought the book was great literature. The book is old enough that the hero can't see the racial inequality in which he lives and to which he objects. This book is the sequel to A Song on the Wind. If you are going to pick just one to read, read that one. It has the same great super dog.

A FAR OFF PLACE
I HAVE BEEN TRYING FOR A LONG TIME TO LOCATE THIS MOVIE. I HAD IT ON VHS WHICH IS OBSOLETE , NOW. I COULDN'T REMEMBER THE TITLE. I TRIED FINDING IT ON A DISNEY LIST, BUT I WASN'T HAVING ANY LUCK. THAT IS UNTIL IT WAS A MOVIE ON A NETFLIX LIST. I ORDERED IT RIGHT AWAY AND I'TS STILL ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS. I LOVE REESE WITHERSPOON. I REMEMBER THE VERY FIRST TIME I VIEWED THE MOVIE AND WAS STRUCK BY THE YOUNG GIRL.......HER LOOKS.......HER ACTING........IT'S ONE OF THOSE TIMELESS PIECES THAT I DON'T SEE THAT OFTEN .

wonderful story. Crumbling book.
This is a great book but the sellers copy I got feel apart in my hands on the 1st read. very very poor condition and not well described. But a wonderful book which I have read many times. too poor a condition to be sold. I did not start reading until after the return dates.

A classic
I loved this book. It is the follow on from A Story Like the Wind which I also really enjoyed but A Far Off Place is even better. I was sad to finish the book. Lauren’s proselytising at the end was the only thing that irritated me a bit. It’s the second time I’ve read both books - the first in the ‘70’s. Excellent - a must read for many reasons, not least of which the political history of Southern Africa and the plight of the indigenous peoples of that region.

Spellbinding descriptive narrative.
I loved this book and although it’s not any easy read it’s descriptive narrative is spellbinding. A must read for everyone.

A rich visual feast of africa.
Loved the observations in regard to the animals both wild and domestic in this book andmy favorite character is indeed Hintza the dog. It is also a wonderful 'how to' survival bookfor the plains and deserts of Africa, and the really enjoyed the characters of the native bushmen,so unspoilt by western culture. But I found the verbose explanations of the emotional responses betweenthe four characters somewhat overdone, though due to the cultural divergance necessary for a less wellversed audience. So a really good book for a younger readers, can't wait to see the film - it can't failto be beautiful.

Be transported to a magical time and place.
I am reading this for a second time and once again transported to a time and place that is sadly gone. Magical. Van Der Post writes with such eloquence.
