Just reviewing the 2 chisel sizes I received

Sometimes I have to wonder what people are thinking when they write reviews. I see several 1-2 star reviews on these "Mortise" chisels that obviously haven't got a clue what (or how) these are used for.First off, these are Mortising Machine Chisels and as the name implies, they are used in a Mortising Machine or in a drill press with a Mortising Attachment! I'm still trying to figure out How some of the reviewers thought they could install these Without the Mortising Attachment. The picture clearly shows that there is a bit and a chisel so I'm a bit dumbfounded as to how or where with a standard Jacob's Chuck a person could determine that they could attach these as a set - last time I checked there is only one hole that can hold anything other than a chuck key.Enough about the uninformed or wannabe woodworkers who have purchased this item without knowing how to use them - oh, by the way, there is this really large data repository called YouTube that I'm almost positive has a video or three on using a Mortising machine or chisels on a drill press.I purchased this item from Amazon Warehouse as used, like new and received Only the 9 & 6.5mm sizes so I am unable to comment on the other two sizes - more on this later. Both chisel sets came in individual hard (reuseable) square plastic tubes - the ones like large taps or mandrels come in. Upon inspection of the chisel sets I could see the ground & polished cutting edges had been factory sharpened both on the bit & the square chisel. I'm guessing the reviewer that received dull & unsquare items got a bad batch - or I got lucky with my set. I attached these to my Mortising Machine and made some test mortises and had very crisp corners. For people that are new to mortising chisels, when you make a mortise you Only cut 2 or 4 sides (Never 3). Think of it this way make the first square hole (4 sides) leave a small space - I typically try for about 1/2 the size of the chisel, e.g., for a 1/2" chisel leave a 1/4" space - cut another square hole (4 sides) continue to the end of the mortise making sure the last square hole is 4 sides and lined up at the end. Go back to the first "space" (that is now a wooden bridge that is smaller than the width of the chisel) and cut the bridge (only 2 sides - top & bottom) continue cutting out all the spaces (bridges) and you should have a very nice mortise that may need a little bit of bottom cleaning. Now that the Mortise is made, make the tenon to fit - never make the tenon first and expect any brand of mortising chisel (or hand chisel for that matter) to fit the tenon properly. With all of the Mortise & tenon joints I've made in my life, I don't think I could ever tell you "exactly" how big the mortise (or tenon) was, I can say it was "about" 3/8 or about 1/2" but I've never checked sizes on the chisels. Why, you might ask, well, I use the "fixed" size chisel and create a tenon to match - much easier to take 1/64th off a tenon than trying to chisel out 1/64th from a mortise.Back to the Amazon warehouse issue. I can't fault the chisel set manufacturer for not having sent all of the chisels, the 2 that came worked well. I will take up the issue of the missing chisels w/Amazon and then decide if I'll return them. Maybe the warehouse worker took the 4 piece set literally - two chisels & 2 bits 😐.Bottom line, these chisels appear to be good (not great) quality, for the casual user they should get you through a project or three so I would reccomend these for that kind of application - I wouldn't recommend these for a commercial shop environment.Hope this helps!

Most likely this purchase is a mistake.

These are junk. They must be ground square by hand. Possibly by a blind toolmaker. Expect that you will have work to do just to get them cutting. If you want undersized holes this is for you, out of shape from the start I didn’t get to use one till I put a few hours in. I think I am going to use these by hand at least I can finish with a chisel. If you don’t know how to sharpen one of these, then you will get lots of practice. Good luck, better luck would be to find one from a manufacturer that has a square in the shop or even just eyes.

Be there, or be square! #90DegLife

Sometimes, being square ain’t such a bad thing. Feeling trapezoidal? These will square you right up!
