The Definitive Guide to DaVinci Resolve 15: Editing, Color, Audio, and Effects (The Blackmagic Design Learning Series)

It gives you hands on practice editing videos. It gives you instructions for each step of the way. You therefore have to plunge in and try things. The illustrations of the programme are not easy to read and so you still have to try to find exactly where the necessary control is and you might flounder around. But is is a lot more directed than if you try to find something by watching a U tube video. You come out with a lot of new skills. I think that so far for me it is the best way to go.

I have no experience with professional video editing software and decided to jump into DaVinci Resolve. I do not regret my decision, especially with this guide. I feel very comfortable as this guide is very explanatory, step by step with illustrations. For learning, I am more of a video course type person but with this book, there is no need.CON: At the beginning of every chapter is a short description of what you will learn and the goals for that particular chapter in a beige box. The book I received must have been rushed to print as the description box is in white lettering in which you cannot read. Not a big deal as it does not take away from the learning experience, just a side note.

For an experienced editor and motion graphic guy this book doesn't quite get you up to speed. It is more for beginners who are not trying to jump right into the advanced skills that you would be doing with Adobe Premiere/After Effects for professionals. If you don't have any major projects to do it is a good way to get to know the basics of the software.I tried to jump over to Resolve 15 for a client project that was shot Using the BRAW codec. I read most of it but couldn't get enough clarity to go in depth for a live action video incorporating motion graphics into it. So I had to give up and jump back to Premiere/AE by transcoding the footage. To really get a professional up and running on their platform they need much more training online. At this point you can figure out anything you want to do in AE/Premiere with a quick google search or youtube search. But there's just not enough how to's and advanced technique tutorials available for this software. I was hoping this would do the trick but it really leaves a lot of cards on the table. You can figure out quickly that there's a lot more you can do with the depth of the menus in this program but you never get enough to learn how to jump right into using the program to it's potential.

While the book does provide some help with the basics, the book photos are awful. The detail of the photos has been lost so they appear grainy/blurry. Very hard to see where the playhead is located and I don't want to download 5 gb of clips to follow every lesson. Did someone bother to proof before and after it went to the printer? I also found that basic edit commands required some experimentation to get them to work. They don't always work in the way the author speaks of. Davinci 15 is great, but I've learned more from youtube videos than this book.

This is a good training volume for DaVinci, sort of like the Adobe tutorial books with exercises to follow. You will want to have the (huge) detailed reference manual, which is a pdf included with the DaVinci download, on hand as the tutorial gives you (and it is well written, step by step) only a start on the depth of this program.

It doesn't go into as much depth as I would like, but as an overview to the different features of the software, it's great. It's an exercise-based approach, with downloadable video files so you can work along with the lessons. At the end there is a test that you can take to see how well you've retained the lessons.This is a good book for any Resolve beginner, and a smart first step before jumping into the many Youtube tutorials and other options out there. Recommended.

I ordered the book and was very happy about the idea of Davinci resolve since its free and its a great software,however their is not many in-depth tutorials online and i figured the book would help tremendously. Everything was great UNTIL LESSON 4 AND UP DO MATCH WITH THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!! AFTER A THAT LIKE LESSONS 6 AND UP ARE FINE, STILL SOMETIMES IT'S VARY VAGUE ON CERTIAN INSTRUCTIONS AND YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO FIGURE IT OUT. IT'S ACTUALLY GOOD AND YOU WILL LEARN BUT THERE WILL BE THOSE OK FIGURE IT OUT YOURSELF TIMES.

Just what you need to pass the DaVinci certification and extremely clear to understand, even if you don't have the software open in front of you. Previous experience with any editing software will make it even easier.

This is a hard one to review because while the content is really excellent for those new to Resolve (better than Adobe's comparable Classroom In A Book series for their Premiere Pro software) a newer version of the software became available within weeks of me purchasing this title (and the other four in the series which dive deeper into specific parts) making it obsolete almost immediately.I bought this book wanting to learn Resolve with a view to abandoning its expensive competitor Adobe Premiere Pro which is only available on an expensive "rental" model. Resolve is completely free so the cost of the book gives you an extremely powerful editor AND training for a very good price.Alas, it turns out that you can't use a full screen second monitor with this software unless you buy Black Magic hardware - a seemingly deliberate choice by Resolve's writers which should have been mentioned upfront, but isn't mentioned at all. That suddenly makes what seemed very reasonably priced software and book combination a lot more expensive if you have a second monitor you wanted to use to view your footage full screen whilst editing. Bear that in mind, before deciding to splurge on this offering.There is also an online training version of this book where a very good instructor gives you his take on the same content over on MZed (the video instructor education site), so if you prefer to be shown stuff rather than read, at least for this volume in the series, that might be a better choice and you don't need to buy this book with that course since the PDF version is included in that book (the course was released after I'd bought this book. Doh!)

I use Davinci resolve for over a year now and learnt everything from YT tutorials. This book however has a lot of very useful tips which I have not seen anywhere on YT. Because of that my work became more fluent and much faster.You'll get some video clips to work with which you need to download from web given and then use with lesson in the book. Must have for everyone who want to work with Davinci Resolve. Highly recommended.

Learning. Could be clearer in places, written by experts but tricky to understand in places. Gets fivecstars because of tge SUPERB online support.

Good information, and well planned and laid out, which is wasted on the shoddy printing for the price.
