Best Solution for rc hobbyists
This is absolutely the best soldering station I have ever owned. I race rc drag cars and in this hobby ya have to do a lot of soldering; I used a Weller for an entire year and it finally gave out. It was bulky and heavy, not easy to use in the rc world. I just spent 1 night resoldering all my cars and a couple more and this station is top notch, easy to use, well built, heats up fast and stays hot, and it's the perfect size for all rc things. I love it and its extremely useful.

Absolutely excellent soldering station.I'm an electrical engineer, but my line of work is test engineering. I often solder things at work, using our very expensive Weller soldering station. It functions much the way this one does, but this one is much less expensive. I would say that the Hakko FX888D-23B7 station is at least the same if not better than the competing Weller station. The tip is wonderfully tinned, the whole product is extremely well constructed and solid, and although the colors of this product make it look like a toy, this is a serious station for people who want quality. It heats to 720F in about 20-30 seconds and really stays there. It is a pleasure to work with. I installed the second smallest tip on mine and have used it to solder 16ga wire with no problems at all. Plenty of heat capacity, even for a small tip. The other tips that it comes with are just gravy. The sponge is great - stays wet for a long time and thoroughly absorbs the water you add to it. The wire wool pad does a great job at removing any excess solder after you've cleaned off the rosin. The iron stand, which is relocatable (I love that about it), is very sturdy and has more than enough weight to hold the iron in place. It also protects the space around the iron so it doesn't melt nearby objects. The whole stand is also metal, even though it doesn't look like it in the pictures. All around, 5 stars with no complaints. I've used hand irons for years (plug in ones), including a Weller WP25. The WP25 was a quality iron and my go to for anything, but the heat capacity was just not enough. Also, the wide size of the WP25 compared to this Hakko iron is surprisingly not a good thing. The thinness of the Hakko iron is much more ergonomic for my personal taste. I'd recommend this to everyone, no matter their skill level, and I will definitely buy one again if I need another (but I don't think it will be necessary!).I purchased this product for $140.33 before tax. I did not receive the item for evaluation.

A HOT product and a great value!
I am an Electric Engineer of 45 years with much soldering experience. I have to say, the Hakko FX888D-23Y soldering station that I purchased from B+D Enterprises through Amazon is priced and built well and performs as well or better than the Weller (or many other similar) soldering stations in the same or even higher price range. The product I purchased from Amazon is the genuine Hakko product (not a counterfeit one!) which I bought for my home work bench because my old Weller soldering station heating element died. I was thinking about getting another Weller, but was disenchanted with the quality, price and many reviews from buyers who were not happy with the quality or reliability of the more recent Weller products (It seems Weller quality and reliability has suffered in the past decade). My Hakko FX888D has a very wide, controlled temperature range and reaches the desired temperature very quickly (<30 seconds) and holds it well even when soldering something that has a lot of thermal mass. I really like the compact size and the separate soldering stand for the soldering pencil. Having the solder cleaning sponge and cleaning wire in the stand is really nice too! The soldering pencil is also compact, lightweight and very comfortable to hold. The users manual was awkward but, with some effort, I was able to figure everything out. I strongly recommend downloading the latest online version of the users manual because it is much more complete than the instructions that shipped with the product. Yes, the temperature can be manually adjusted, but I like having the five temperature presets, which are custom programable and it is a breeze to quickly choose one of the desired temperatures. Once it's set up, it's very easy to use. I also do RC airplane modeling, so I set one of my presets to 500 deg. F, which is a good temperature for well controlled cutting and melting of holes in plastic without burning it.If you buy the Hakko FX888D soldering station, I don't think you would be disappointed.(No one compensated, paid or asked me to write this review)

Great entry-level soldering station
I upgraded from an Aoyue 469, and it is a world of difference. First, this station heats up very quickly. I use preset mode with 3 settings: 180 C for standby, 265 C for normal soldering (trial and error to fit my "technique"), and 330 C for high heat like desoldering. I can do some soldering, re-tin, and press Up-Up-enter to set the station to 180 C and place the iron into its holder, which holds the iron at the perfect angle. When I want to start soldering again, Up-Enter and its at temp in <5 seconds. The iron is not heavy, but still delivers a good amount of heat.Yes, setting up the station through the interface is horrible. You need the manual in the box AND the manual online for the extra settings. I highly suggest you set up the FX888D for preset-mode. Manually adjusting the temperature is not easy (press and hold enter, set each digit with many clicks, then press enter again). Set the temperatures you want in a few presets and changing temperatures is so easy. Not was easy as a knob (pot or encoder), though.Compared to my 469, I am using less solder due to tip maintenance. The 469 was constantly burning the rosin and quickly turning the tip black. I have now used my FX888D for longer than the 469 and the tip still looks very good compared to the same Genuine Hakko tip that I use on the 469. Also, the 469 needed to be at a higher temperature in order to work as quickly as the FX888D.I bought this bundle because it comes with extra genuine tips.
