Excellent, but different.
This is VERY different from ordinary bread, even from ordinary (American) pumpernickel. It's extremely dense and sliced very thin. The flavor is strong but wonderful. The physical strength of the bread isn't super high, so sandwiches aren't going to work. Likewise, only very soft things will spread. Cold butter will destroy it. But, the flavor is great, and it lasts forever. It's great as a backup meal for the cupboard and as a nice treat. If you've never tried it, I highly recommend giving it a shot, assuming you like rye breads. If you don't like rye, you probably won't like this, but if you do, you'll love it.

Clean Ingredients. Remains Fresh. Less Sweet than Russian "Borodinsky" bread
Russian "Borodinsky" bread is more sweet, but this is a close substitute. Clean ingredients, no preservatives but, surprisingly, it remains fresh. It is very filling - a small thin slice will satiate. This bread with a slice of Italian Lardo...food of gods.

Not 100% whole grain
So, there is a label on the package that says "50% or more of the grain in this product is whole grain." This tells me that this bread was not made with 100% whole grain. So, the whole point was to get 100% whole grain bread. I wanted barley, not wheat. The bricks of bread are pre-sliced very thin and each slice is 150 calories! That's a lot of calories. The whole point was to reduce my calorie in-take by eating whole grain. Boo hiss! It tastes ok toasted. Handle it gently or it will fall apart. Amazon did a good job delivering it on time and the packaging was undamaged and the bread was not spoiled in any way. But the grain in it is not 100% whole grain lol! What a waste of money.

Tastes amazing and healthy too.
This is amazing bread! It makes the best toast on the planet and great sandwiches too! It has almost a year shelf life if unopened so it's nice to stock up and have it on hand. Delicious!

The taste makes up for the occasional crumbly piece.
Much better than what I can get locally, but the slices stick together and need to be cut apart with a knife in order to separate. It's fresh and has that, I guess, "nutty" flavor that pumpernickel should have (the stuff I can get locally completely lacks the correct full flavor profile). It can be a bit crumbly. The taste makes up for the occasional crumbly piece. Pumpernickel is an acquired taste, but once acquired, this is a pretty good version of the "real stuff."

Delicious taste
Because I'm gluten sensitive I've been looking for something with European origin that would have unadulterated ingredients. I think I found it in this bread. The secret is in adding a little butter and dropping it into a frying pan at low temperature. It's softens the bread and adds an additional flavor that I like. The nutty flavor is a treat. While it's not white bread, it's satisfying which has eliminated my craving for the softer breads. Additionally, it freezes well. So I bought a bundle and put everything in the freezer. It was about the same price as the grocery store shelf and the convenience outweighs a dollar here and there. More importantly, I found it a little difficult to find in the average grocery store, like Publix. Florida Publix does not have it while North Carolina Publix does. Go figure :-)
