Introductory Phonology (Blackwell Textbooks in Linguistics)

This is a perfect book for readers who are the beginners of Phonological study. It is well-organized and comprehensive in almost all the topics in the field of Phonology. The abstract and difficult theories can be easily explained with a lot of examples. That is the most impressed point!

Overall there's no question this is a good textbook, but there were some places where I thought the author could be clearer and more careful/rigorous. This is perhaps because the book is a derivative of lecture notes (and the author didn't have the time to revise it enough times). But again, I could, I think, get a pretty good sense of what phonology is about by reading this book.

A good, easy to understand guide to phonology. It takes you slowly through a very complicated process, breaking it down into its component parts in order to make it easily understood. The beginning of the book focuses on single phoneme analysis, and in chapter four, introduces the features used to craft phonological rules, and from there moves into increasingly complex analyses, utilizing plenty of examples to illustrate its points. Yet the book itself is relatively small, which is a bonus if you have to carry around a lot of texts on campus.

Taught undergraduate Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology out of this book in 2013. Students found it understandable, and it's organized very intuitively. It definitely needs to be supplemented with another book for phonetics and with extra exercises, but definitely a good introduction to the subject.

I HATE PHONOLOGY, but this book finally made things clear enough to me that I could pass my PhD comps in Phonology. If you're as lost as I was (For example, after reading Peng's book) then give this guy a try. Well done, Dr. Hayes.

As a linguistics student, this is a wonderful reference guide. Published in 2009, it's modern, up to date, and uses the current IPA standard. This book was a recommended supplement for a phonology class, but it's helping me in all my courses. It's an excellent book. 5/5 stars.

I love my Kindle, and despite some issues with page numbers, I always check to see if my textbooks are available on Kindle so that I can carry a smaller load. Unfortunately, I didn't read the reviews prior to buying this, and it is not functional on Kindle as a textbook AT ALL. Many of the IPA symbols (which are vital when studying phonology) do not show up in readable print. And some of them are simply substituted with different alphabetical symbols, making the text not only illegible but incorrect. I was completely unable to complete my assignments from the book and had to buy a hard copy afterall. Save your money and buy the book; for the first time, I found a book that is completely nonfunctional on my Kindle and find myself wishing I could get a refund.

This is an easy to follow along textbook. Very good read :)
