Sketchbook Explorations: For Mixed-Media and Textile Artists

This book is packed with so much info that is very relevant to my art journaling process. I think the photos and project explanations are very helpful and this has been a great resource.

Beautiful art book by an amazing artist who shares her process and others with us. Highly recommended!

Perhaps there is a bad batch of books circulating but I do not share the opinion of the reviewers who were unhappy with the text and images. On the contrary, I find both totally fine and the book to be a total inspiration and in a word, "yummy." The text may be a little small and not Times Roman but put on a pair of reading glasses and it's fine. Although I have not tried it yet, I like the idea of a "walking sketchbook" and that's only one of many, many new ideas I'm looking forward to trying. This publisher has beautiful books in general. I own 3 and am happy with all of them. They have covers that feel like fabric. If you're an artist who appreciates a beautiful book, this is for you.

I found the book , author’s work, along with other artists to be beautifully presented. My thoughts are that it is packed full of visuals and information that create a jumping off place for the reader to create their own meaningful work. There are many exercises. Today I chose the walking sketches. I took myself to our botanical gardens and enjoyed the focused, peaceful process of mark making which I will develop with various media. I tend to be more visual so I don’t spend a lot of time on text. I did NOT find the text painful as another reviewer commented. I found the text held my attention and a delight to read. This gem has already found its way into my mixed media/ textile/abstract library. Thus far,it is my most cherished- Thank you Shelly!

It's an AMAZING book filled with luscious photos and ideas on making Art.THIS is what I want in an Art book, and I rarely find.+ Perfect size, hardback, (with lovely texture binding).+ AMAZING inspiration photos. Also photos that correspondto the topics and processes that are discussed (practical applications).+ SO MUCH useful and amazing Content. (! !!!!)I'm a collage artist, I don't work with textiles, but the topicsthat are covered are universal for artists. I can easily apply this.Using sketchbooks to work through art series, art ideas,creating alternative media to use for mark-making, etc.This book is ART-working inspiration!

I was not expecting this book to be about artists ways of using their sketchbooks, I thought it was going to be more about mixed media art journaling, which is my fault entirely. If you are looking for a book about how artists use their sketchbooks, then this book may be for you. I found it hard to get into because I am more of an intuitive artist, a budding artist, and all of these artists are successful and professional that are showing their art. I am an artist in the process of learning how to create and find my voice as an artist. It is not really an instructional book in the way that you would use instructions for learning new art techniques for art making. It is more about artists showing their sketchbook pages and how their sketchbooks serve them in creating their final pieces to go into shows.

This is the perfect inspiration to have laying around your studio and to take with you when out sketching the world!

I never buy two copies of the same book, but Sketchbook Explorations is so inspiring and beautiful (soft fabric cover!) that I purchased for the bookshelf and one for my studio. Now I won't be hesitant anymore to pick it up with paint-stained fingers when I need a quick dose of inspiration for my mixed media art. Every time I flip through the pages, I notice something different, something inventful. It's one of those rare books that won't get boring.
