The laws of physics and why this is needed
I resisted getting a headphone amp for a long time because I didn't want to deal with yet another piece of tech. I enjoy over the ear headphones when I walk the dog and always wanted a little more volume than my phone delivered. Recently I took a long flight and spent hours with my headphones on. The whole time I was wishing desperately for more volume. So I bit the bullet and bought an E11 as soon as I got back. Yes, way more volume than I would or anyone should ever use. Phone and tablet designers have done an amazing job of squeezing a great many features and sensors into our tiny beloved gadgets. But when it comes to driving speakers to vibrate air into significant sound levels there is only so much that can be done with tiny Microprocessor circuits. The audio amps small enough to fit in a phone do a great job of creating a clean audio signal but creating real volume requires real power. Wattage! And currently the components and battery capable of creating the power needed to drive a real set of headphones does not fit into a phone or razor thin tablet. Enter the external amp. Pop the lid off the E11 and you will see a battery and components sized for the task at hand. It's pretty easy to see why nobody builds a mobile device with this kind of horsepower built in. My suggestion is to either use in-ear buds or get an external amp like the E11. I use a case on my devices. So some velcro on the back lets me stick the amp on the back leaving the glass unobstructed. The amp is the size of a credit card and about 3/8" thick. The weight is unnoticeable. Sound is extremely clear with no detectable noise or distortion. Controls are pure simplicity. It also functions as a preamp to drive self-powered speakers. (Proceed with caution) I am very happy with the E11 even if it means yet one more thing to charge and manage.

A Great Headphone Amp With A Surprisingly Great Accessory
The FiiO E11 Headphone Amplifier has shown itself to be a terrific product, especially when considering its relatively low price. Its extended frequency response in both the high and low frequency ranges plus its very low distortion and high audio power output (for headphones) brings out musical nuances that I have not heard before, unusual in a product in this price range. Background hiss or other noise, when I heard any, was always the fault of the playback device and not the E11. If you use the E11 with reasonably decent quality headphones, you will almost always hear an improvement in sound quality. Listening through higher-quality headphones such as Audio-Technica ATH-M50's yielded significant improvments in sound field and musical instrument definition when listening to classical music. Pop and rock music were also noticeably improved. Bass sounds were more realistic and full, and mid and high frequency sounds were more defined without being edgy or hyped. The two bass boost (plus "off") settings can help some bass-shy headphones to blossom without the sound becoming boomy. Build quality is good to very good. Overall, sound quality is excellent, and of course, headphone dependent. The up to 12 dB of voltage gain (amplification) and rated 5,000 ohms input impedance (sorry, technical stuff here!) allow the E11 to be used as a stereo line amplifier, too. This means that the E11 can provide a signal boost for low output devices such as phones or tablets (using earphone or even stereo line level outputs) when the E11 is connected between your source device and the stereo line input on your home, car or portable sound system. Translated, this means that the E11 can roughly double the volume level of the signal supplied to your stereo sound system hookup or portable self-amplified speaker, provided you have the necessary interconnecting cables on hand. Of course, the sound system must be capable of reproducing the increased sound level. The ability to change the battery by opening up the E11 is a definite plus (a spare battery is included as an accessory along with a battery charger/power supply). The FiiO E11 can also be recharged directly without removing the battery through use of the supplied USB cable and battery charger/power supply. The supplied Micca Accessory Pack includes an Aison UC-2 Universal Charger and a spare BL-5B 3.7-volt flat pack battery. The Aison charger/power supply turned out to be a surprisingly good device. In addition to being capable of charging various sizes of 3.7 volt flat pack batteries including common BL-5B and BL-5C varieties, it also has a full-size USB jack that can provide 5-volts at up to 500 milliamps to charge the E11 as well as most other standard devices that can be charged from a typical computer USB port. What surprised me was that the battery charger function provides a consistently high level of charge that completely fills the battery without exceeding the battery manufacturer's 4.2 volt applied charging voltage limit for standard BL-5 family batteries. Note that this is not a "fast" charger. It normally takes 2.5 to 4 hours or so to charge most batteries. Consider the Aison UC-2 as a standard or "slow" charger that gradually brings a battery to a full 100% charge without battery heating that can, over time, reduce battery life. The battery charging function is indicated by a rapidly flashing (annoying?), multi-colored light that drops to a dull, steady red glow when charging is automatically completed.I have a basic cell "feature"phone that employs a removable BL-5B battery. After using the cell phone's own charger, my always-on-standby phone typically shows that the battery level has dropped to 67% (two of three battery state-of-charge bars remaining) after about three to four days of continuous standby use. After removing the battery from the phone and charging the drained battery in the Aison UC-2 charger/power supply, I am now getting a full charge (three bars) indication from my cell phone even after seven days of continuous standby use. This tells me that my phone's own charger does not fully charge the battery to 100% with each charge. I have a few other devices that use BL-5 series batteries, and I have noticed similar results when recharging using the UC-2.The Aison UC-2 employs horizontally slidable pin terminals that can be aligned exactly as needed to match the connections on the battery being charged. Note that the left (+) terminal should connect to + (plus) on the battery, and the right (-) terminal should connect to the - (minus) connection on the battery when charging. The pin terminals on the charger are not labeled as to their polarity, and they should be (I have marked mine) to avoid connection errors. You can verify their polarity with a standard dc voltmeter, should you have one available to you. Based on my experience with the unit I received, the Aison UC-2 Universal Charger is an excellent performer. And with the Micca Accessory Pack that includes this charger adding only about four dollars or so the to cost of the FiiO E11 Headphone Amplifier, the UC-2 is also an excellent value.Overall, this is a great package!

Great add on amp for Mp3 players but not to good for Smart Phones as the amp is too bulky and gets in the way of your screen....
Well this portable head phone amp is pretty good at boosting the output of a lesser Smart Phone's built in DAC and amp. The reason I returned mine had nothing to do with this amps sound and instead it's overall size. This amp sounds good at what it does but it has it's limits and headphones rated about 24 Ohms will not play loud enough to be used effectively. So this is not the fault of the amp but how loud it can play with 50 Ohm head phones. It's also a bit larger than I thought it would be and got in the way of the phone's screen making it useless. So for use with a cheap MP3 player this amp would be great. But for Smart Phones your better off just buying one with a better DAC and head phone amp built in.Smartphones are changing in this area right now with more and more being designed with better DACs and headphone amps capable of driving the headphones or ear buds you choose to use.So not a bad product but was not as small as I thought it would be and thus pretty useless for my needs. So I'll rate it at 4 stars since it's not the amps fault that I misjudged it's size and output abilities. Therefore I will not blame the amp for my lack of proper research as so many others do.
